This class was very helpful, it helped me land a job for after graduation!! The role that I've accepted is a investigation specialist. During my interviews, when asked about experience that would help me be a better employee, I was able to recall the simulations that we completed in class. The interview panel was really impressed and I saw on their faces that they were both shocked and somewhat relieved that I knew what I was going into. When I elaborated on a simulation as an example, the interviewer said that my position would be really similar in terms of writing the reports and working with a team to find optimal solutions to problems that may arise. The panelist said that "that's actually pretty much what you'd be doing." I am confident that after taking this class, I am able to be a better planner and technical writer. With what I learned here, I believe that I can take the skills I learn at my job to transition into management and make an impact at the company and my community.

I've learned the concepts involved with the different aspects of project management. I learned the different components that have to be taken into account in order for a project to be successful. I learned how a project manager initiates a project, plans the steps in the project, conducts design control, makes changes to the project scope, closes the project, and conducts clinical trials. In addition, the simulations have given me hands-on experience with solving problems that are likely to occur in the industry.

As a laboratory scientist, my "field-of-view" is very limited to my personal experiences and the roles I'm familiar with within the laboratory. After learning about project management and what defines a project, I've become aware that I was actually a component of multiple projects. Since taking the course, my interest in project management positions have grown and I have taken the initiative to apply. With the wealth of knowledge I've obtained from this course, I am confident that I would be a successful project team member and with time, a project manager.

This class is helpful because I can not only learn the project management knowledge but also get the skills for handling the cases in real life. As a PhD student, I usually have some projects and have to work with the whole team. By taking this course, I have learned some very useful skills of working in a team. I have learned how to communicate with other team members and how to plan the work. I have already applied these helpful skills into my daily work and these skills help me a lot. At the same time, this course gives me a chance to know more about the medical device industry. Also, with these knowledge of project management, I think I have a much clearer career plan now.

This class was beneficial in showing a different perspective of the industry. Not everyone will be an engineer, some people will become managers of projects. Whichever role a person has, it is important to know both sides of the coin, so understanding the necessary steps and thought processes of a project is very beneficial. I learned about the way projects should be managed and developed, and how the order of the project is formatted. I also found great benefit in working on the test simulation, which tested my cooperation with group members, and taught me about test development and finding solutions when testing products. These are important skills to have been exposed to in order to broaden my engineering knowledge.

I've learned a lot from this course and I can't wait to apply what I've learned in an industry setting. From this course, I specifically learned a lot about the nuances that go on in project planning and management in the medical device industry. I knew it was elaborate, but I didn't know all these small things went into it behind the scenes. I also didn't know that so many different organizations within the company were involved in the process. This gives me a newfound respect for project managers in having to organize every little detail to make sure their project runs smoothly. Since I am just starting my career, I plan to use what I have learned from this class to be a better team player and a group leader and maybe one day be a project manager.

This class was very helpful for me to overall understand how a medical device is developed and what are key steps for successfully managing and completing projects. Not having experience in medical device company always gave me this insecurity of myself thinking I will never be able to work in this industry. But after having some these simulations and group projects, I realized it's actually not much different than developing any other product. I work in cosmetic industry and many times the troubleshooting processes we do are very similar to the group projects we did here. Technical knowledge is different but I realized how similar the project running processes are. We learned in the last lecture about choosing or changing vendors or finding alternative ones. This is something I do often at my current industry. We also have to deal with clients/ stakeholders when things go wrong or not planned or tests fail (like simulation 3). That's why my biggest takeaway from this course is confidence in myself with the current experience I have in cosmetic industry and applying the knowledge in my future career in medical industry.

I think this course was useful for several reasons. The biggest help is the discussion of design controls and relevant industry terms/processes and how they link to project management structures. In academia, there is a lack of education on what actually occurs when working in industry and a huge gap in knowledge exists for many new graduates. This course helps fill in those gap and relates industry-relevant information in an academic setting. The other very useful part of this course (as frustrating as it may have been at the time) are the simulations. Having to deal with different people and navigate different personalities is very challenging but real situation that occurs often in the workplace and in managing projects. The simulations gave us a taste of how you might need to navigate when working towards a project goal.

Thanks,

I think most engineers have a sufficient science background for the industry but they don’t have the medical device development knowledge that is needed. Having the prior knowledge allows me to succeed faster in the industry, which is why I registered for this class. I also think that the simulations showed me how obstacles can occur in projects, how to do your research/think about the problem, and then how to effectively choose the best solution. It gave me a look on how team projects usually work too. We had to manage finishing the simulation with everyone’s busy schedules colliding. This class also confirmed my interest in the industry rather than academia.
