Project Initiation requires several things, as per the lecture, and two of them are enterprise environmental factors and organizational process assets.

Give some examples of each as they appear in your organization where you work. How would you mobilize these if you had to use them to initiate a project?

A few examples of enterprise environmental factors at General Dynamics Electric Boat would be using Microsoft Project, and the general culture of holding conferences.

A few examples of enterprise organizational processes assets would be Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs like stated in the lecture), Engineering Reports (ERs)that give the history of a procedure and any changes made to improve, and "Fact Finders". "Fact Finders" refer to a meeting and documentation of a problem, lessons learned, and ways to ensure the problem never happens again.

If I had to use these to initiate a project, I would start by reading any ERs and SOPs that are related to the project that I am working on. I would then search to see if any "Fact Finders" exist on my project and speak to people who have more experience than me at conferences related to the project. I would then use all this knowledge to try to outline the project in Microsoft Project.

I was once working on a small-scale project at Monmouth University where the project sponsor was the local fire department and my project managers in a sense were two professors. These made up the enterprise environmental factors since I don't believe any software was used for PM.
As for the organizational process assets, considering this wasn't a corporate project, there were virtually no processes or guidelines to fall back on and consult. Pretty much all of these assets came from the experiences of the professors.
If I was in charge of this project, I don't really see any other way of doing it. Of course I would have liked to bring in experienced project managers, but considering that the main limiting factor was the abysmal budget, I believe going the way it happened would be the only way to do it. The situation reminds me a lot like how new entrepreneurial companies form these teams, except if the there were even less resources to pull from.

I haven’t worked in industry but from the previous jobs that I’ve had there are many enterprise environmental factors and organizational process assets.
In terms of the culinary field, an example of an enterprise environmental factors include the pos system used for retail where orders are made and when workers can sign in and out. Another example would also include the workers, the scheduling program that we use in order to alert people when they have their shift.
In terms of process assets, we use recipes and workplace rules to keep order and keep consistency in the products.
If I were to start a project using these inputs, I would first ask the former and current workers for some input on improvements that I can include in the project so that I can reach the best possible version of the project. Then using the scheduling program, I will figure out who works when on what days. Also using the scheduling program, I can tell who signed in at what time and when they signed out so that I can give their pay based on the amount of time that they worked.

In my work experience at Bristol-Myers Squibb, I noticed key environmental factors that influenced how the company functioned. Their organizational culture/ structure were very well defined into specialized departments (silos) that preformed primarily project based tasks. In addition, the Symyx electronic notebook was heavily utilized to record results.
As far as organizational procedures, BMS employed its “standard method” in its approach in the analytical chemistry department. In addition, as also stated by ginger Anderson, SOP’s are also frequently utilized.
Now if I was charged to initiate a project within my previous department utilizing these methods, I would call together the department into a meeting so that I could get all staff on the same page and then hold further meetings with the senior employees to further get my point across. In addition, I would track progress though the periodic review of the electronic notebooks to make sure the project was progressing as planned.

Some enterprise environmental factors might include a sudden market niche for a particular product or a governmental decrease in sales tax for a particular resource. I would then argue that the proposed project should be initiated because there is a need for it in the current market and/or the material for its production can be bought on the cheap. Enterprise environmental factors, when favorable, are opportunities and I would mobilize them by reasoning that we must "strike while the iron is hot!"

Some organizational process assets would be if the project was similar to a previously completed project or the project is within our knowledge base. I would the argue that the proposed project is like that one we did before where we successfully completed, made a lot of money, and had the stakeholders happy and/or we have a set of employees on the payroll skilled in the tasks needed to develop this project. I would further argue that our organization was founded on initiating and undertaking such projects.

Regarding the culinary field, a case of an undertaking natural elements incorporate the pos framework utilized for retail where requests are made and when laborers can sign in and out. Another case would likewise incorporate the laborers, the booking program that we use keeping in mind the end goal to ready individuals when they have their day of work. Regarding process resources, we utilize formulas and working environment standards to keep request and keep consistency in the items. If I somehow happened to begin a venture utilizing these data sources, I would first approach the previous and current specialists for some contribution on changes that I can incorporate into the venture with the goal that I can achieve the most ideal variant of the venture. At that point utilizing the planning program, I will make sense of who works when on what days. Additionally utilizing the planning program, I can tell who marked in at what time and when they marked out with the goal that I can give their compensation in light of the measure of time that they worked

I work as a biomedical equipment technician for a company that services medical devices in hospitals throughout the country. My company deals with external environmental factors by implementing and maintaining ISO 13485 certification processes. We also implement visual standards within our workspace to maintain organization, reliability, and consistency throughout the workday. Following these protocols may seem tedious at first, however they quickly become routine and intuitional after some time.

At where I work, Johnson & Johnson, one of the many organizational process assets we have are task and approval matrices where we document the order/timeline of a task if it undergoes any important timeline changes or description changes. We also document if there are changes in people responsible for the task here as well. By having this matrix up to date, if a new employee or task lead is starting a task, they can reference the matrix to see which approvers to contact for assistance. If it is a project manager, they can reference the matrix to see which approvers to be on their team to complete the project.

I previously interned at a small, additive manufacturing start up company. Due to the size, the project team generally included everyone in the company. This created a highly interpersonal culture in the organizational where everyone worked together and collaborated frequently and the company utilized Agile management software. In terms of organization process assets, there were defined procedures for the manufacturing processes but not for PM. The lessons learned and experiences of PM from previous projects were primarily passed by word of mouth between team members.

If I were to use these enterprise environmental factors and organizational process assets to initiate a project I would create physical documentation of the factors and assets to provide a more clear and concise documentation of the history of projects within the company. I believe a documented history of projects would provide a more efficient transition between projects and decrease the risk of repeating the same mistakes.

Currently working for a company that is bouncing back on their feet. Their current Enterprise Environmental Factors is not as strong as it use to be in terms of organizational culture. Basically, they are on the start of creating and collecting of new values, expectations and practices that will guide and inform them about the actions of team members.

As a company that deals with personal care and cosmetics, if I had to use the Enterprise Environmental Factors which includes software used for PM, in order to optimize the internal processes and facilitate communication and collaboration between the different stakeholders involved in product development, I would introduce the Lascom Project Lifecycle Management software.

This will help during the initiating stage to organize the workflows, stage gates management, automated notifications, Gantt chart visualization, milestones, reporting, and enhancing internal and external collaboration. Also, enabling easy management of products and volume of documents and data related to products and projects by centralizing them into a single & structured source in order to have an easy access to information and the dashboards so as to achieve quick and strategic decision-making.

With the lessons learnt from so many failed project due to lack of proper initiation, introducing of the Lascom software will help a great deal in successfully initiating a project which will also lead to successfully planning and executing the project and in the long run having a good product on the market within a scheduled time line.

As an intern for a medical device manufacturing company, I was able to see the impact enterprise environmental factors played on the ability of the company to initiate and work on projects. For starters, due to the small size of the company, the new product development team had only one or two projects being worked on at a given time. Therefore, the organization’s culture was very friendly as most employees knew each other and were usually working on the same project together. As for organizational process assets, the company had well defined processes and guidelines that were easily accessible on a shared drive. Furthermore, there were folders of historical information on the drives that one could reference for their own work. For example, one of my tasks as an intern was to develop work instructions by following a template form on the drive that also contained a document containing guidelines and feedback from prior work instructions. Lastly, if I had to initiate a project, I would reference the historical records of prior projects to find one that closely resembles the current project being initiated.

Of course you will never know all of the finest details of what is included within the project at the outset, nor how much effort / expense is really required to accomplish the project’s objectives. But the point is that there is no substitute to spending a bit of extra time at the beginning to define the project’s boundaries. This is probably the number one thing you can do to ensure successful projects over the long term.
