I personally think the matrix organization is most effective for running projects. It may seem a bit complicated at first, especially for someone who is currently working in a functional or project based organization, and people may think that the idea of being accountable to 2 people is stressful. However, if it is run correctly, I believe it can be very efficient, and in order to achieve high efficiency, there must be good communication between you, your functional manager, and the project manager, so that everyone’s time is being used efficiently. The idea of working in a project based organization where you work with the same project team members for multiple projects in a row may seem more appealing, because you get to know everyone well and can stay in your comfort zone. One downside is if you do not get along well with your team members you are stuck with them for awhile. Also, you may fall into a rut of running projects one way, while there may be a more efficient way. When you are constantly working with different people who have past experience with working in other teams, you get more team members giving input about their past experience and ideas to streamline processes and increase efficiency.
