As a kid I was in the Boy Scouts. We had 4 different patrols, each with a Patrol Leader and his assistant, and then there was the Senior Patrol leader with his two assistances. Even though there was no “skill” separation, this reminds me very much of a functional organizational system. I do like this system for organizing the rascals we were, but Im not so sure I would like for a company setting. I think it’s important to have communication across different “patrols”. Thats why I think I prefer the Projectized organization. I think its more importune to have a clear leader and a team to work with, but I think the goal should be completing the project. Thus giving you the ability to work with multiple teams in helpful ways. I think a strong or balanced matrix system is good, but at times i still think its confusing how it works and who reports to who. Im not the biggest fan of it, but I’m sure once involved it would be less complicated and useful
