Only 35% of projects today are successfully completed. This rate leads to an overwhelming amount of wasted resources. Researchers, startups, and other organizations are beginning to apply artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and other advanced technologies to project management. Research indicates that 80% of project management tasks will be AI-operated by 2030. Applying AI and other tech innovations to project management could improve the success by 25%. What are your thoughts on artificial intelligence and project management? Will it be as much of a success as predicted?
Very interesting topic. Although I do not doubt the effectiveness of AI, I do feel that people overestimate its abilities. Project management as we know, is very complex and multidimensional with many variables to play around with. Will AI be able to handle these cross-functional functions? Also project managers need to be a "people" person, having excellent communication skills to inspire a team to complete a goal. Lets say when transitioning to a more AI based project management system, I do not think an AI alone can run team to do a project. However it can be used synchronously with people to accelerate certain processes and ultimately making the project management processes more streamlined and smooth. We have ways to go before AI alone can perform al Project Management functions.
AI can be a very effective tool in project management; however, as the two users above mentioned, it should not be used without the supervision of a human. One way which AI can help project management is by streamlining mundane, routine tasks which fall outside the commonly defined realm of the project. One of the primary tasks of project managers is to send emails to the team and to individual team members with collections of tasks. Although these emails considered without their content are not crucial to the project, they are still time-consuming to complete manually. With publicly available AI software including ChatGPT and Bard, such mundane tasks are reduced such that the responsibility of the project manager is reduced to the essential content rather than the task of writing the emails. Apart from emails, AI can also be generate ideas and spreadsheets. As AI advances, it may even be able to help create Gantt charts with reduced human input. Moreover, AI can be used to generate ideas during the initiating phase, and more effectively search the internet for methods of approaching a project that have been attempted in similar projects, which can prevent project managers from reinventing the wheel. However, AI is subject to errors, and even if AI works perfectly, there is no replacement for the human mind; people are the prime conductors of progress.
Implementing AI into project management seems like a good idea and seems like a very different approach to project management. I think applying AI to project management can happen in today's society because of the immense amount of data the AI would be accessing compared to a project manager. When fed data about project management about numerous projects as well as the timelines and materials required, among other pertinent data, this would be advantageous in providing the AI with more realistic milestones and more resources than a typical project manager would have. In essence, most project managers have experience based on similar projects and years that they have managed projects, so the manager would have insight about certain deliverables, but compared with the AI, which would have this data from these project managers based on a multitude of projects, the AI would be better at estimating timelines for certain projects. The caveat I would anticipate would be that using AI alone would not be the only solution, but coupled with AI, it would be helpful in multiple projects. In addition, the AI would be able to know the various steps needed to complete a project, as opposed to a project manager stepping into unfamiliar territory where hiccups can occur along the way.
Like what many of the preceding replies have mentioned, AI absolutely has its uses in the realm of project management. It can analyze huge qualms of data in fractions of a second, produce reports, pinpoint discrepancies, and suggest improvements to foster greater efficiency. But what many of the conversations above dance around, is the opinion that AI should be used as an advisory role rather than the main focal source of management. AI absolutely has its uses it providing the data and analysis and offering its own suggestions, but only an experienced project manager knows whats best for their team, company, and the methodology to achieving the completion of a project. I believe that there are too many 'non-analytical factos', that being factors that is not quantifiable or explainable to a computer, that contribute to a project's success such as team chemistry and downstream future projects/tasks. This is why AI should be used as an advisory role to provide its own opinion and perspective from a purely objective standpoint, but a project manager should have their final say on to what degree it is incorporated and used and how objective you can be before adding the human factor involved. An example of an AI objective opinion would be a change in a manufacturing process that will improve efficiency and reduce production time that does not require major changes in personnel or adding risk.
