One of the significant challenges of a first time project manager is meeting your team where they are at to achieve the preset goals of the project. Often times, new managers are bursting at the seams with new ideas and innovations to bring to an organization or approach to the project. The problem with is that the "way we do things" attitude may be an obstacle to get over. I remember being newly elected manager full of ambition and a vision for the future beyond the current project and it was overwhelming to my team. In order to have a more cohesive project I had to learn as a new leader that everyone does not approach projects the way you do and understanding the varying personalities of your team members may help bring down those barriers initially. Also I was in a rather unique position in that I was relatively younger and had more formal education than most of my team but their experiences far exceeded my time in the industry so eventually we reached common ground. Allow your team members to do what they do best and lead from the rear. Sometimes the best leaders can be the best followers and the biggest cheerleaders of your team in order to achieve the best outcomes and ultimately project completion and success. The objective of a project manger is to successfully develop a project's procedures of initiation, planning, execution, regulation and closure as well as provide guidance to the project team's operations towards achieving all the agreed upon goals within the set scope, time, quality and budget standards. Be firm with these objectives but be flexible and amicable. Your project's success depends on it.

@vcf3 I completely agree with you! Interpersonal skills are vital when work with/for people. The tip you gave is a great one because cultivating an environment that is conducive to the team's working abilities is important because if a person is uncomfortable, he or she will not perform at their best. An additional tip I would give would be to establish the common goal using appropriate rhetoric that will place all team members on the same page. I have not personally been in that position, however I would use these tips if I ever am!
