If I had to choose a project team, I would want members who are eager to learn and grow as well as passionate about the project that needs to be done. While it is important to have people who are familiar with the topic, when a group of eager and passionate people come together, the possibilities are almost limitless. While it may take some time for these members to grasp the full concept, they will stop at nothing to get there. I think if a group is comfortable with each other and are used to working with each other, paired with eagerness and passion, thats the group that I would want for any project.

If I were to organize a project team, the main skills I would look for are determination, team work, and a great work ethic. As discussed before, it does matter on the type of project it is when deciding the type of expertise. If it were an electrical oriented project as discussed before, of course the main personnel to be included would be electrical engineers. However, I would also recruit others with different backgrounds in order to get a different perspective on the project at hand. A well rounded team will make for more ideas and an overall better product.

I would prefer a team with open and clear communication skills as we have to work together throughout the project there should be an opportunity for everyone to speak and be heard carefully. A project cannot run on a single person or a single department so it requires every team member to be on board with clear communication. The team must be passionate and  hardworking, should have clear roles defined so they do not have any disturbances along the longer periods of the projects. The communication should be clear and professional with all the levels of the organization to make a project successful.

Other than knowledge and technical skill, I agree with many others in that an ideal project team would have good communication skills. If a team can communicate well, it would be much easier to complete a project. It is important to note that communication skills include more than just letting your team know how you are doing. It also includes helping others and offering advice when necessary, while also informing others when you are struggling and being open to suggestions. Other than communication, it is also important if the entire team is passionate about a project. If the team is passionate, then they would be more driven to complete the project and the overall morale of the team would be positive. Another aspect that would make a great project team would be diverse backgrounds between the members. With a variety of backgrounds, a team would be well-rounded and have better problem-solving capabilities. These are all qualities that I believe would make a great project team.

Hello everyone.
Project managers need to be effective in a lot of ways. For example, you need to finish the project on time and the quality of the product need to be outstanding. However, they don’t do it alone. They need a team in order to do a good job. I believe that the team needs to have very good communication skills and they need to be responsible in the sense that they finish everything on time. I know that sometimes the way teams vary depending on the project to be done. For example if you are creating an electrical device you will need more people with understanding of electronics rather than biomechanics or tissue engineering. However, in the industry a lot of teams stay together for long times because they already know how to work thing out together. So my question for you is the following: What skills would you mainly prefer if you had to choose a project team?
Sincerely,
Roberto Pineda.

Roberto,

I think you pose an excellent question. If I had to choose specific skills to create my fantasy project management team, I would aim to find the best of the best in each field related to the project but make sure they have a strong collaboration background. One thing that would be really indicative of someone with strong collaboration skills is people with many publications, people who have worked on a lot of international-based projects, and people who have taken no traditional paths to get to where they currently are in life. Another huge component of my dream project management team would be having a variation in diversity, such as variances in race, age, sex, etc. With their variances in backgrounds and strong communication skills, this team style would be ideal for any project.

I have to agree with @gingeranderson, a diverse group of people with variety of background is the key. No matter what is the industry, we need someone who knows the regulations, technical parts, research and development. But most importantly, a group of team players who knows how to communicate with each other and get the project done with outstanding quality. from a personal experience, I worked on a project with three other Biomedical Engineers, the four team members had a Tissue engineering background, however, the project required a Biomechanical and  Bio-instrumentation engineer. Even though, it was out of our comfort zone and area of study, we meet the milestones and we were able to deliver the  and the project on time and to meet the customer needs.

The key was to work together as a real team and help each other learn part of the project that required electrical and mechanical testing. Sometimes, as a team player, we need to step out of our part and help another player to meet a milestone.

In an ideal project team, you would have diverse experts relative to the project at hand. As Roberto said, if you have a product that requires electrical expertise, you would have electricians complete the job. If you worked on a heart monitor, you would need both electrical experts and medical professionals to provide a framework of constraints for the project. As for personalities within an ideal project team, it should contain at least 1 leader to keep the team on task and moving forward; some members should be mediators for when setbacks become apparent in the project timeline; and although all teams should be familiar with some aspect of the project, some members should be active experts in case any technical questions should arise over the course of the project.

If I was able to choose a project team, then I would choose a diverse group of like-minded individuals that are willing to work towards the end goal together despite the issues that might arise within the project. Having a team with multiple backgrounds in different areas will allow each member to show the expertise in their field. Being able to work strongly independently and collectively will allow the project to get done based on the deadlines that are given for it. I would want a team that has no issue accepting responsibility and working to the best of their ability. Experience and drive can lead to the success of a project.

@am2343 I agree with you and everyone else that clear and constant communication is necessary for a successful project. Communication will bring diverse backgrounds and experiences together for the goals of the project. Being able to pick up where someone else might lack is a good quality in a team member. It means that they will not let the project fall behind. It also shows the multiple skills that other people may progress in for another part of the project. I like how you worded the passion of a team and how that could lead to the positive outcome of a project. You made good points that I would want as a part of my own team.

I believe that there are certain fundamental skill sets that team members need in order to it be the most ideal team possible. First you need a very capable, strong, motivated leadership from a project manager who is forward thinking and is able to see the project to fruition from start to finish and can anticipate and recognize when he or she needs to pivot between certain stages of the development of the project.  You also need someone on the team who is resourceful, who is able to gather resources from various outlets without going over budget and is able to make due with the materials given and uses connections to leverage resources without putting a strain on the company‘s bottom line. Competent problem solvers are also key to an ideal project team because they provide critical thinking skills necessary to overcome any obstacles that may arise during the implementation stage in order to successfully execute the plans put in place.  Team members who are meticulous in their deliberations especially when it comes to following the plans previously outlined are essential to the synergy have a great team.  And finally some members are role players, or more hands-on, behind the scenes figures whom without their presence on a team would be utter chaos in terms of successfully accomplishing the goals of the project.  It is the responsibility of every team member to recognize any hazards that may affect the output of the project and be particularly cautious not to push beyond the boundary of safety. If the collective of these personalities are members of the same team, it would be very hard for them not to accomplish any project that lands on their desk.

IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST GO ALONE IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR GO TOGETHER – African proverb.

Generally speaking, if I had to create my dream or ideal project team, I would want to create a highly creative and versatile team to tackle any project that comes our way. When constructing a team, the first thing I would identify is finding people who share the same goals and have a wide range of skill sets. Sharing specific goals in life is essential for any relationship. That extends to the relationship that you have with your team, and has overall mutual respect for one another will be vital, especially in high-stress moments. Also, to goals and care, I would want a team that has a wide range of skills and have different backgrounds. The wide range of skills will help with problem-solving and overcoming roadblocks in a project's life cycle. The defined skill sets will also help establish individual team members' roles, which will help with overall communication and project efficiency. The diversity component will be vital to creating creative project solutions and working on international projects or projects exploring new ventures for your company.

I can briefly add into the topic of how to build a team, especially how myton has described it in his words. A project needs a good leader and a great team. A team is as good as its leader. He/she has to take up responsibility of the team and not only lead them from the front, but also work on their weakness and strength. Please The team also needs to step up every time it is needed for them to step up. They must help each other in any topics which they might be god at or even if they are not well at some points or some parts, the team needs to build up on the weakness. I agree with bijin in which he had stated that the team needs a technical expert but I disagree the fact that the work would not be done without an expert in the said field. In a world of such technological advancements diligence and enthusiasm for the technology is the most effective way to get a job done. A sponsor, a visionary, a project lead and diligent workers can make a very efficient project team.

An ideal project team comprises of someone who is a technology specialist, someone who is an expert on the industry's regulatory procedures, and someone who is an expert on the industry's vocabulary and connections, in my view, will make up the perfect squad. I'd get everybody together, but both of these abilities would be critical to the team's success. Usually, industry claims it can educate anybody on the technological side of the market, but I honestly believe there is no replacement for professional schooling, because it is important to provide a technical specialist with much more experience than the average employee. Every business has its own set of rules, and each team requires someone to keep them on track and in compliance with the rules. Finally, I said that you need someone who is knowledgeable about business jargon and has connections in the industry because no matter how good the idea is, if you are not diplomatic and lack contacts, it will not be picked up or financed. Knowing when to contact and who to call is a full-time job, and no organization is fully alone. To function at its optimum, it is based on a significant range of other variables.

If choosing a project team, I would like to make sure that everyone is a good communicator. The entire team must be able to communicate effectively to complete a project run smoothly. Communication allows a group to be open and honest about what’s going right and wrong. It also encourages individuals to speak up about expectations and responsibilities. I also think a team must be self-driven and able to collaborate. It would be imperative that there are critical thinkers to make informed decisions. When there are critical thinkers on a team, they can further along a project to do things more efficiently. Project members must be great at time management, ensuring they can meet deadlines where things are not outside of their control. They must understand that budgets have been set and to try by all means to stay within that budget by starting and finishing on time. And one of the last skills I would prefer outside of technical skills and expertise; is leadership. If everyone can lead effectively, there should never be a moment where the most influential member for the task isn’t leading.

As a project manager, I believe the ideal team would be comprised of someone who is a technical expert, an expert on the regulatory processes of the industry, and someone who is an expert on the jargon and contacts in the industry. As the project manager, I would bring everyone together but each one of these skills would be vital to the team. Usually, in industry, they believe they can train anyone on the technical side of the business but I really believe that there is no substitute for formal education so it is vital to have a technical expert who has knowledge well above the average amount you would find in the company. Every industry has regulations and each team needs someone to keep them honest and in line with industry standards. Lastly, I said you need someone to be an expert on the jargon and contacts in the industry because no matter how good your idea is, if you are not diplomatic and have no contacts, it wont get picked up or continue to be funded. Its a full time job to know who to call and when to call and no company is completely isolated. It depends on many others to have optimal performance.

You highlighted a few important points that I didn't consider. Jargon and contacts could actually be an important factor in attaining success in the industry. Having someone on your team that is well-versed in this area could lead to needed project funding and more.
