If I had a business I would run it as a matrix. After doing research I feel that it will give me the leadership I like but also freedom for my employees. Some factors that led to this choice include knowing how annoying it could be sometimes to constantly have someone watching over you and I do not like the feeling. The advantage of the matrix is allowing multiple departments to easily communicate and collaborate on a project. Employees answer to multiple managers as opposed to just the functional manager, issues are resolved more quickly, and company-wide interaction is increased. If everyone has someone to report to it is less stress on one certain person and can allow issues to be handled before reaching me. The only disadvantage I can see is maybe is the same thing that I am considering as an advantage.. having mulpite bosses can backfire and end up as a bigger mess than just having one.
I would also run my business as a matrix organization because a matrix organization allows multiple departments to easily collaborate and collaborate on a project. The employees have access to a diverse set of skills and perspectives. I think it is important to have knowledge transfers and no department or project silos as the company is new and everyone learning would help the company advance quickly and more efficiently. Moreover, resources are shared between departments which helps employees to develop efficiently. However, this organization structure also has disadvantages. Projects and department schedules may conflict, and everyone has two or more bosses. This might cause potential conflicts between the managers and projects. Furthermore, too much work on the employees can cause overload.
Hello everyone! I know for week 1 we were only asked to read through chapter 1 of the PMBOK Guide and information on organizational structures is in chapter 2, section 4.4 but I still wanted to respond to this post because in choosing my career path I have always explored the idea of being an entrepreneur. Currently, I am leading a team of engineers in developing a medical device that has received funding by the National Science Foundation and part of this journey has involved working with industry mentors, constructing and refining a business model canvas through customer discovery, as well as outlining a plan for commercialization. Therefore, I hope that although this thread is in reference to chapter 2 that it is still fine for me to respond to it as part of the week 1 forums given that is where I found the question. So to dive in, there are 8 types of organizational structures commonly seen when running a business: organic, functional, multi-divisional, matrix (strong/weak/balanced), project-oriented, virtual, hybrid, and PMO. If I were to develop a business, I would strive to create a multi-divisional organization where the company establishes broad divisions before further subdividing employees by function. Furthermore, I believe it is important for divisional resources to support product lines. Some advantages to this structure include accountability and the ability to make better strategic decisions by leaders. Some disadvantages of this structure include that it is not possible for a smaller business and that there can be communication issues between divisions.
