Hello Zipporrah great question. Competencies that are important for a project manager to possess and just to name a few are to be able to execute a project, be able to make the tough decisions in a project they are managing. Have a strong communication level with their team an with others. A project manager should be able to develop a strategy to lead a team forward so that they can ultimately achieve success. A project manager should be able to team manage by handling issues that may arise within the project. Then to balance everything within a project by having excellent time management to ensure projects will be completed on time. Lastly, a project manager should be able to utilize critical thinking skills. I believe that for a project manager these competencies are needed to ensure that they bring out the best in the team that they are leading as well as themselves.
What competencies are important for a project manager to possess?
Hello Zipporah. Project managers must have decision making abilities that allow them to effectively complete tasks efficiently. This requires having the capability to balance out teams so that the projects are fulfilled. In addition to balancing out teams, project managers must also know how to adjust any necessary requirements to maintain an effective workplace while also staying within time and budget guidelines. Competencies are necessary because they contribute to a successful workplace. With that being stated, how can project managers effectively gauge skillsets of an employee?
Although it is important for project managers to possess many competencies, the three core competencies I think are most important for a project manager to possess are effective team building skills, delegation skills, and problem solving skills. Through team building, effective communication skills are shown. This is demonstrated through keeping the enthusiasm and motivation alive throughout the team. Delegation skills are a fundamental component of successful project managers. Being able to assign and oversee tasks and to trust your team members to fulfill their duties allows for project managers to avoid micromanaging their team. Problem solving skills is a very important competency for project managers to have. Problems always arise. Project managers should be able to solve a variety of problems and address disputes and problems. This is key to ensuring the project is completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Hey Francis,
Great post! Your choice of the three core competencies are really good picks. However, to effective use those skills do you think that a fourth skills might be necessary, such as communication skills. I state this one because you can know all the right team building skills but if you don't communicate them efficiently they will not work. Same applies for delegation and problem solving.
Hey Ariana,
I really enjoyed reading your post and getting to see your view point on what skills you think a manager should possess. However, I want to challenge you to define more about what extacly communication skills are. Is it just being able to express your ideals to others or does it go beyond that?
