Picture yourself in your dream job within the Biotechnology sector.  In that position you have the opportunity to create any commercial product you wish.  To complete that project successfully, what sorts of things would you need to do at each stage of the Project Life Cycle?

 

For my commercial product, I would implement an electronic system to track patient satisfaction

    • Initiation
      • Develop project goals
      • Identify the project scope
      • Clarify available resources for project development
      • Acquire funding if needed
    • Planning and Analysis 
      • Assess feasibility of the new system , technologically, financially and operationally
      • Understanding of current work-flow processes and staff organizational tendencies
      • Identify the user needs 
      • What functions and features must a system have in order to meet these needs
    • Executing
      • Will an outside developer be needed?
      • Purchasing a system from a vendor?
        • Contracting with a vendor to host applications?
      • Evaluating alternative solutions to address the business problem 
        • Cost-benefit analysis
    • Closing
      • System selected and negotiations finalized
      • Installation of the new system 
      • Training staff 
      • Converting any necessary data from paper to electronic 
      • Disposing of confidential data
      • Preparing organization and clinical staff to go live
    • Managing
      • Maintenance of the system
      • System upgrades/updates, handling glitches and bugs
      • Resources need to be allocated to support the new system ( people, technology, upgrades etc) 
      • Reports and assessments of system effectiveness  for health care executives, boards, investors, stakeholders etc.

Product- Solar-powered cell phone charger

Project Initiation

  • Creating a business need-eliminates always having to have a phone charger
  • State the opportunity-eliminate the inconvenience of a dead phone battery and reduces electricity usage
  • Identify the problem- Eliminating the need for a charger when an electrical circuit is not available.
  • Identify the scope- To develop a solution to ensure the phone has a charge as long as sunlight is available
  • Identify the deliverables- testing and validation, final product, and presentation to the marketplace
  • Identify the stakeholders- Steering committee, marketing, government, consumers, and financial contributors.

Project Planning

  • Statement of work
  • Project Team development
  • Identification of the project timeline
  • Creation of workflow documents
  • Estimation of budget
  • Gathering resources
  • Risk mitigation

Project Execution

  • Creating specific task
  • Explaining tasks to team members
  • Development of a scope of work (SOW)

  • Managing the budget
  • Timeline

Project Monitoring and Control

  • Using PMI / PMBOK methodologies, engineering development of a prototype,

Project Closure

  • Release of the product
  • Celebration
