How important is knowing about project management if someone does not plan on going into it as a career? Is a basic understanding of project management critical even if you are not a PM?

I imagine that having at least a basic understanding of medical device project management is important for knowing one's role in a project and how that role can affect others' roles. It is also likely important to know for individual resource management and for being familiar with the different stages of a project (with the associated documents at each level). However, how far in depth should that knowledge be? Is it recommended that every position takes a project management course, even if that isn't the nature of their role?

Understanding project management, even if it is not one's primary career path, may be extremely useful in a variety of professional settings. In the medical device industry, where teamwork, regulatory conformance, and effective communication are critical, having a basic understanding of project management principles can dramatically improve one's contribution to a project team. Understanding how projects are planned, conducted, and monitored can provide useful insights about one's function within the project and how it interacts with others, enabling teamwork and alignment toward common goals.

While not everyone needs to be a professional project manager, having a basic understanding of project management fundamentals like project lifecycle stages, resource management, and documentation requirements can be extremely beneficial. This knowledge provides individuals with the tools they need to better manage their responsibilities, collaborate with team members, and contribute to project success. Whether through formal project management courses or informal learning opportunities, investing in this expertise can lead to increased efficiency, collaboration, and professional advancement, independent of one's function within the firm.

A basic understanding of project management is critical because there are many benefits associated with the skills and abilities acquired through project management. The skillset is invaluable in a medical device field. Such skills can help in being more successful. Individuals with such project management skills have great communication skills, ability to manage priorities, and are equipped to handle unexpected obstacles/events. Project management knowledge would better inform team members of the product life cycle and what necessary steps should be taken to ensure successful product development. As graduate students, we likely have already employed project management skills and knowledge.

While most may believe that only people with the title of project manager are leading projects, there are many functions in the medical device industry that need the ability and knowledge to do so. Upon reading the post, I immediately thought of a current project I am on where the project manager is on paternity leave and thats why the R&D lead under them had to step up immediately to cover for the weeks that they will be gone. This is a great example because not only having basic project management knowledge, but in depth knowledge of management and more specifically the company procedures is vital for many different positions. Additionally, this can help you "climb the ladder" in corporate quicker because people will notice that you have the ability to learn information outside of your function and that is a vital skill to have. As others have stated, project management is not only important within the industry but even in a day to day life, where many things going on in your life can be considered "projects" and require proper time management.

Understanding project management might be useful even if you never want to work as a project manager. Thus:

Project management skills such as goal setting, time management, budgeting, risk assessment and communication are highly relevant for positions in many areas of employment, irrespective of whether one has been officially assigned the task of being a project manager. Knowing the concepts of project management can help you collaborate better with colleagues and contribute more effectively to team projects. This will provide the employee with a better understanding of project timelines, milestones and dependencies so that you can coordinate tasks and allocate resources more efficiently. Project management skills are not just applicable at work; they also come in handy when it comes to managing personal projects or initiatives. Therefore, whether one is planning their wedding, organizing a community event or renovating their house applying the principles of project management may assist them in staying organized, setting realistic goals and tracking progress properly.

While project management in itself is a career path people choose to go into, the lessons and morals learned from project management allow us to excel in any setting we find ourselves in. The basics of project management involve time management, working in teams, planning ahead, and making big decisions. In every engineering field, understanding these common core principles is what allows for a project to be successful. It's hard to believe how many projects are scrapped or delayed simply because the people involved did not have a good grasp on time management. It's easy for us to neglect project management courses and think of them as not pertaining to engineering, but these courses are just as important. Especially for those of us who work with medical devices, understanding device requirements and deadlines is important when planning out a project. Another important aspect is understanding the stages of a project, and what is needed during each phase in order to move on to the next.

Comprehending the fundamentals of project management is beneficial for individuals in a variety of roles because it promotes teamwork, facilitates resource management, and improves communication abilities. Knowledge of project lifecycles and documentation facilitates faster changes between phases and lessens waiting times. Even though not every position calls for in-depth expertise, receiving training to build a core understanding can improve an individual's ability to contribute to projects and collaborate with others. In the end, choosing to pursue project management training should be in line with professional objectives and organizational standards.
