I prefer the matrix organization due to the openness and collaboration. I would be able to acquire knowledge that I would not have learned in school otherwise. The ability to work for more than one boss has its advantages because reputations can be built with multiple people. Engaging with a diverse staff can be motivating as there is less dependency on one individual. Nonetheless, more flexibility is offered because there can either be a strong or weak matrix within the organization. Being a manager or leader does not mean they hold a lot of power. A weak matrix may allow someone to stay in their department and occasionally work on a project outside of it. This is because the organization values consistent department work more. A strong matrix emphasizes projects because the project managers have more authority. Similar to a functional organization, advancement is possible, but the options are more flexible and not as straightforward. A matrix organization allows more growth, individually and collaboratively. A functional organization, on the other hand, consists of departments that withhold information from one another, which can hinder development or create discrepancies. The one person in charge also holds authority and makes the decisions.
In the past, I have worked in a functional organizational structure, but I think I would thrive in a matrix organization, specifically one that operates as a strong matrix. I like the fact that strong matrix structures reduce departmental and project silos, preventing teams from becoming cliquish, private, or isolated. In this organizational structure, the project manager holds authority and can assemble the right team members quickly and efficiently, which helps keep projects moving. I don’t think I would enjoy working in a weak matrix environment because unclear power dynamics between department heads and project managers can create tension and confusion for staff. This overlap in authority could easily lead to delays, conflict, or even a toxic work culture. A strong matrix promotes collaboration across projects and departments. This supports successful projects but also aligns well with the type of work environment I would work best in.
