First, the marketing team is needed to make a DID especially if they know what customers want from a product or have done market research. To ensure that a DID is made with functionality in mind I believe that knowledgeable representatives from a company’s engineering and manufacturing departments be present. These departments do not necessarily have to remove or add to the DID but they should be able to add information to a discussion on feasibility and likelihood of a project completion. Also, this can allow the departments to better prepare for a potential upcoming project.
A design input document is vital in ensuring that a project satisfies the needs of customers but is also feasible in terms of creation. Although input should be obtained from all departments for the successful creation of a project, the customer and/or the marketing team are perhaps the most important factors when making the document. The project is dedicated to satisfying the needs of the customer, and therefore, the customer, or at least the marketing team, should be present in the process of deciding on specific design inputs. Other than the customer/ marketing team, it is also important to have the engineers and manufacturing specialist involved in this process as well. The engineering and manufacturing departments would be able to more accurately decide whether a project itself is feasible. There will always be complications during the assembly of a project and having these department’s inputs early in the process could help to prevent future problems. Engineers and manufacturers have hands on experience and will be able to provide better feedback if some design inputs are not ideal. For example, if a particular project has multiple moving parts, an engineer or manufacturing specialist would be able to visualize the product better and provide feedback for which design inputs would be best and which design inputs would not work.
For a design input document to be useful and efficient, I think that it would need to both meet customer needs and be feasible. Thus, I think that the groups that should have an input on the Design Input Document are Marketing, Engineering, Research and Development, and the project team. Marketing will make sure the design specifications match customer needs, Engineering will ensure that the device is feasible, and Research and Development provides the basis for the device’s function. The project team’s job then would be to process this input to make a design that is both feasible and useful.
Design input document (DID) is done at the begging of the project and it is the first document the the project manger would ask to be done. For me, I think that the marketing team should make the marketing analysis before they start to write the DID. Also, all project departments must be involved into it by shearing the required data of the final devise. Finally, the marketing team collect all the information together and write the DID.
Marketing is the major department which gets specification information to the device as they have close association with the customers and the end users. More information can be given by Regulatory department and the production department. The regulatory has the clear idea about the product approvals so they have great input on the specifications and the production has all the manufacturing information which is also important for the input on specifications.
