One interesting thing I can relate to myself about the root cause analysis is during my time coding undergraduate for CS major. When I was in lower classes, I ran into a bug and just tried to fix the lines that I just wrote, thinking that's what has caused the problems. And I never figure it out because it is always about importing the library wrong or just did not start the file right. Later on, after many times like that, I learn to look at the most basic things first to see if it ever works with just some simple line of code, then debug forward. I think this skill is not instinct, or a better way of saying, does not have to be instinct. Experience can taught you how pay attention to root causes if you have seen it enough.
