gingeranderson replied to the topic Challenges PM face in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
Another challenge that PMs face is personnel resources or enough people with the right skills to do a job. Sometimes you have a job and you either don’t have enough people available or enough people with the right skills to do a job. To resolve this, the PM would have to talk to different people in the company and resolve this internally to the…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic PM: Handling Team Issues in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
When reading this question, the term “enterprise environmental factors” comes to mind which relates to the companies culture, people available and software used. In this situation, I think the companies culture would ensure that even if people are gone on vacation, there is still someone to do their job. At my old company General Dynamics Electric…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Source Selection in Executing Process in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
I think source selection should be done in the executing process. In the planning phase, you are developing many aspects such as the DDP which includes the GANTT chart. I think you should wait until everything including the DDP and the GANTT chart is done (or as much as possible) before doing source selection because you learn what you really need…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Are Missed Milestones really Bad? in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
I believe that missing a milestone is really a bad thing in industry. While working at General Dynamics Electric Boat, milestones are set and those are part of a contract. When you don’t meet those milestones, it could cost the companies millions (each day you are behind) and it makes it look like our competitors can do a better job (Newport…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Experience Breaking Down A Project in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
While working at General Dynamics Electric Boat, I worked on projects that were broken down into departments and other projects that were broken down into “area of expertise” or categories. I can honestly say that breaking a project down by departments was the worst. This was due to people in that department not actually having a formal background…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic PM Internationally in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
I think the biggest difference would be the regulations that you have to follow and know in different countries. The plan.do.check.act cycle, PM processes, and design controls can be applied to any situation. The biggest hurdle would be anything to do with culture such as enterprise environmental factors. Being in a different culture would mean…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Revising a Gantt Chart in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
If it immediately popped, I feel they need to go back to the beginning. Their design controls failed horribly. It states that the test is “to ensure the balloon system does not pop in an artificial casing that mimics the stomach after 10 days of placements.”. It also states that its removed after 6 mos. Why not test for 6 mos or even longer than 6…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Discussion Topic: The critical path in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
While working at General Dynamics Electric Boat, I worked on nuclear/radiological related projects (my undergraduate degree is in nuclear engineering). Engineers on the non-nuclear side were sometimes put on nuclear jobs and they would ask me to assist them. They always thought certain nuclear regulations didn’t apply to their “small” job that…[Read more]

While working at General Dynamics Electric Boat, I was working on a project that had to go on a certain submarine. Due to failures of prototype testing and the time needed to re-design the prototype, it couldn’t go on the targeted submarine. We explained this to all stakeholders and ended up targeting another submarine that was similar to put our…[Read more]

While working on General Dynamics Electric Boat, I managed new, experimental projects. These were ideas that’s the navy had and the research laboratories and other companies helped move forward. I was the lead who brought everyone together. I was the one who brought all the companies, the ideas from the research laboratory, and the government…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Discussion Topic: Integrating Six Sigma into Project Planning in the forum Project Management Process and Medical Device Development 8 years, 7 months ago
I think the Six Sigma process can be integrated with the Project Planning Process (PPP) very easily. Both are related to the Plan. Do. Check. Act cycle.
The PPP is comprised of initiating, planning, executing, closing, and monitoring and controlling. Six Sigma changes based on methodology and can either be define, measure, analyze, improve, and…[Read more]

gingeranderson replied to the topic Best timing for validation and verification in the forum Introduction to Project Management 8 years, 7 months ago
I believe that the validation and verification steps are done throughout the process. The 9 design controls are ideal and the general layout of how a project should go. For me personally, I think of a yoga mat. It is intended “for maintaining or encouraging a general state of health or a healthy activity”. It is intended for only general wellness and is low risk.
