For the purpose of medical device development, I am of the opinion that the more varied the skill set of the project team the better. It will always be necessary to have people in the team asking the extra question, thinking of new approaches to the problem and ways to do something more efficiently. This is the reason why the project group need to establish a good repertoire with each other, efficient group conversations are what elevates projects to something truly impactful. For this reason, having a project manager that has multiple cross disciplinary skills is necessary for these types of conversations to transpire. The problems that would be encountered in a medical device project are multifaceted, which would require various inputs or perspectives on the device to move forward. The project manager should be the one leading the charge on facilitating the conversation on how to address these problems even if they are completely familiar with the discipline. Even if in the beginning each member of the group primarily only has experience in one discipline, it should be natural for the success of the project for over time they start becoming more aware and knowledgeable for other disciplines.
