Sales communicate directly with customers. Emails, phone and video calls, and in-person meetings are involved. The goal is to convert potential consumers into customers. Once that is achieved they're responsible for maintaining relationships with customers.
I think marketing and sales are great fields for social people that enjoy having conversations and interacting with customers. I worked in retail for a short period of time. I had to market music and cultural merchandise. The route of marketing in this position was mostly word of mouth and in-store advertising. If I were in this position again, I would use social media, emails, and text messaging to market to the public.

Like many of the posters above, I would also like to reiterate the importance of the sales and marketing team behind any product's development and marketability. It is important for any product to be:
a.) known by its consumer base and purchasers for its effectiveness, special characteristics, stand-out capabilities, and attraction. Marketing often times is the first look anyone has of a product, so the way something is marketed plays a huge role in gaining its popularity. The efficacy of a product might not be advertised properly which would result in it not gaining a foothold in any market.
b.) sold regularly or consistently have cash flow in order to make up for the funds spent in R&D, manufacturing, wages, etc. Having a strong sales force is important to create the profit that these medical devices and products that the the intentions of producing is often the main reason.

I agree that Sales and Marketing are important for Medical Device companies to meet the needs of costumers and deliver their final product to them. Marketing is responsible for delivering the company's mission and strategy to the costumer, and then returning customer feedback to product development. Sales directly communicates with costumers and responsible for maintaining relationships. Without these departments, device development would be out of touch with the market and unable to deliver costumer needs.
