I prefer doing research in industry that can be used to solve problems faced by the current generation. The thought of seeing the results of my research have a real world application would certainly be rewarding for me. For instance, if I were doing research in the medical field and developing some type of medical device or drug, I would prefer to see it helping patients immediately rather than waiting many years before my research has practical applications. Seeing those results would also motivate me to make improvements to the device or come up with new and better solutions. However, this doesn't mean that research aimed at helping future generations is unimportant. Many important discoveries being made today are based on previous research that may not have had any practical application at the time. From my point of view, both types of research are equally important, but if I had to choose, I would definitely prefer research that can benefit the current generation.
