Of the Project Management Knowledge Areas (Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Risk Management, Procurement Management, People (HR) Management, Quality Management, Communications Management, Stakeholder Management, and Integration Management), which do you consider to be most important and why?

Thanks,

Matt

I think scope management is the most important because a blurry scope can lead to unnecessary costs and expenses due to the scope being molded into something that was not initially covered. I know during my senior design capstone project my advisor was very adamant on us spending time developing a strong scope and sticking through it throughout the project no matter what feedback we got to add additional parts and pieces which would increase the timeline and associated budget as well. Because of this we were able to complete the project completely and under budget.

Integration management has responsibilities during all phases (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, and closing) of a projects lifespan. These include developing a proposal, creating a project management plan, managing/accomplishing the work, as well as monitoring and controlling the work until it is seen to completion. Personally, however, I would have to agree with @ridmehta in identifying how important scope management can be. An unclear or too large of a scope can influence other aspects of a project such as cost, resources, teams involved, time, and risks. Therefore, it is very important to establish a plan, collect inputs, as well as define and create a work breakdown structure early on so that there are no unexpected surprises.

I think the two most important Project Management Knowledge Areas would have to be Time Management and Cost Management. Any company, medical device related or not, is always trying to create a new product in the least amount of time and in the most budget friendly manner while still meeting customer needs. Keeping within the budget and time frame of the project is very important to the company but also to the stakeholders involved and invested in the project. Resource planning will make sure that everything is within constraint. Using the WBS will give a sense of how much time and money needs to be allocated to a certain task. Like @ridmehta mentions, Scope Management is also important. If a certain task is not within scope, there is no need to waste extra time, money, and human resources to complete it and potentially delay the actual tasks that are within scope.

While there is no clear answer on one single aspect being the most important as they all need to occur in order to have a successful project, there are some that should have a higher emphasis placed on them as they will dictate the final product more than others. Areas such as communications management and scope time management are two very important parts that will be relevant throughout the entire duration of the project. It has been a reoccurring theme throughout this semester that communication is one of the most important parts of any successful project and is a skill that every project manager needs to have. Having a healthy flow of communication between the manager and the team, as well as the team within themselves, will help direct the flow of the project in a positive manner and can make it easier to solve any complications. In addition to this, time management is also a very important factor since all projects have deadlines and it is crucial that these deadlines are all being met. Being able to budget the time necessary for each portion of the project and also leave time out to go over it and make sure there are no mistakes will lead to a cleaner final product and will overall help the team look better.

I agree with many of the other answers. The case I will make for cost management is that money makes the world go round and makes a project successful Managing costs is very important for the success of your project since additional costs can cause delays if not enough funding is available. This is also an area where you can effectively manage and prevent additional costs by ensuring you have contingencies in place and that you understand the project well. This alone can save a lot of money.

As @mmodi alluded to, I think Integration Management is one of the most important knowledge areas in project management. Not only does is play a part in every single phase of project management, it is the knowledge area that is responsible for doing the actual work of developing the product in the execution phase of the project life cycle. After proposing the project, the other knowledge areas work together to break down the projects, get all the specifics sorted out to determine if it is feasible, where the resources will come from, etc. and then the project goes back to integration management to bring all those details together to develop the project management plan and then use that to make the product and then make changes to it as they are deemed appropriate. While the other knowledge areas are important as the others have mentioned, there is no other area that is as involved with the project than Integration Management, hence why I believe it to be the most important.

I think people management should be one of the most important parts. People within the project team are the executor for the work and their performance could affect the output of the whole project directly. In my opinion, a successful project manager should have excellent  people management skills. The people management skills include ability to develop people, good communication and other properties. Good people management could help the team to recruit appropriate people to join the project team and in charge of the matched work. At the same time, good people management could also ensure the good communication in the team and help the team to have better performance.

i would like to say its Quality Management. For every company, a good product is the most important thing especially those product can be lethal. if the quality of a product is not very well. it can hurt the brand name. somethings the company will pay millions or billions dollar to fix it. if i am a project manager i would spend more time and money to ensure the quality is good than spend money on a law sue after the product was released。

Project scope management is most important as it refers to the total amount of work that must be done in order to deliver a product, service, or result with specified functions and features. It includes everything that must go into a project, as well as what defines its success. Without a comprehensive project scope management plan, there’s a good chance your team is doing work that’s unnecessary to complete the project at hand or even wasting time thinking about what they should be doing next.

I believe that each of the components are important, yet I believe that stakeholder management is fairly essential.

The project needs the support of management and without the knowledge of what the customers need, want, and expect, and what the subject matter experts on the team may or may not be able to contribute, it would be fairly difficult to have a successful project. Therefore, I think that stakeholder management is important.

Of all the Project Management Knowledge Areas, I would have to say that Scope Management is the most critical yet costly process area. Project scope management is a process that helps in determining and documenting the list of all the project goals, tasks, deliverables, deadlines, and budgets as a part of the planning process. It is typical for a big project to have modifications in project management.

With the scope of the project management defined right initially, it becomes much easier for project teams to manage and make the required changes.

Although each component of the project management process plays an essential role in success, I'm inclined to believe that cost management holds high significance. If this is not monitored and the budget adhered to, it can completely derail the project.
