Essentially, all reasons that were given that could affect the schedule variance are just different types of risks. Others have already brough up risk management as a tool to mitigate these risks therefore reducing the impact of those risks on schedule variance. An effective risk management system is the best tool and solution for factors that could affect schedule variance. While there are different individual responses for each risk that vary in effectiveness, I believe the best universal tool to mitigate most risks is building redundancy. For example, having redundant team members may feel like a waste of money until one of them has to take leave. Not having a backup team member that could complete their work could mean putting the schedule far behind schedule. Having redundancy in equipment (either the whole system or if that is not feasible then in parts that could break), will also help in case of critical equipment breakdowns. So while there are many solutions to individual circumstances ultimately the solution to most schedule variance is risk management.

Failing during verification or validation can cause a major setback since the project team may need to revisit earlier phases in the design control process. In addition, supply chain issues, such as backordered materials, can delay production or important project milestones. If a project has a negative schedule variance, one way to address it is to reevaluate task priorities and reallocate resources to more time sensitive tasks. Effective communication between team members is also crucial to ensure issues or delays can be handled quickly. In addition, before starting a project, it is beneficial to build in slack time, especially around high-risk steps such as design verification testing or approvals. This helps to create a buffer so that if delays occur, they do not immediately put the entire project behind schedule.

A major factor that could affect schedule variance in a medical device project is the failure happening during verification, validation OR regulatory review. As an example: if a prototype fails biocompatibility testing or required documentation is incomplete, the team may need to repeat the testing, revise the design, and delay later milestones. This could create a negative schedule variance because the project is no longer progressing as planned. Additionally, factor is supplier delay, since the late materials or components can hold up prototyping and testing. A good solution to this would be to build the risk management into the project from the very beginning by identifying high risk steps early on, adding schedule buffers around them, and maintaining backup plans such as secondary suppliers, cross trained team members, and earlier regulatory communication. In this way, when problems do come up the project team can have a faster response and reduce the effect on the schedule variance.
