Hey guys,
So far we all have read about the Scope of the project that comprises of documenting and determining the list of deliverables, goals, deadlines etc pertaining to any project. But my question is what do you understand by Project Scope Management? And how would you plan the Scope Management Process for any medical device in your company?
The scope is the process of developing a detailed description of the project and product. The inputs are projected charter, requirements documentation, and organizational process assists. The project charter is the process of developing a document that formally authorizes a project or a phase and documenting initial requirements that satisfy the stakeholder's needs and expectations. In multi-phase projects, this process is used to validate or refine the decisions made during the previous iteration of Develop Project Charter. To answer you Shachi you need enter a market where there is a gap for a company to flourish and grow. This can be a novel approach for sure. On the flip-side, a company already in a medical device market may have to change the scope of their DPC. Like mentioned this process changes multiple times. For example, Unliever targets many markets whereas Johnson Johnson works in the medical field specifically. The Charter for Unilever has more acceptance to different markets then does J&J. Therefore a companies scope may vary based on the growth and development of the company.
At Sloan we outsource the development so when we set up a Project plan we include a scope that clearly defines the deliverables, goals, and deadlines. Since it can be very expensive to develop a medical device we usually break it down into Phases (Phase 0, Phase Ia, Phase Ib, etc). Phase 0 is the planning phase where the scope is laid out for example the company will come up with various designs of the device and then Phase Ia will work with moving forward with the scope of only focusing on one design to move forward into a functional prototype for a clinical trial. So the Scope really lays out what deliverables are expected (which design will move forward) and the corresponding timeline with milestones/deadlines. The scope of the project is definitely important if you're working with an external company you're paying because if you decide to go with another design or to add other things that were not originally contemplated with the signed off plan (scope), the company will consider that to be out of the scope of the project and that means it will cost you, literally. So defining the scope is very important, because you don't want to have to go back to the higher-level stakeholders to ask for more money.
Scope Management is also important because of the delays that can be caused by scope creep. Scope creep is the continuous and uncontrolled growth of the project after the project has already been initiated. As a project manager, it is important to watch out for this because it can cause delays to your project. It is the project manager's job to ensure that the team members are working on things that are within the scope of the project. This does not mean that the scope of the project cannot be widened during the life of a project. The DDP is a living document, and it can be updated as needed. It is important to note however that changing the scope of the project will mean that the timeline will need to be updated and the end date of the project may be extended, which is not always an option for upper management.
From project scope management you can learn about the overall direction of the project and how you see the project moving along. The scope should be very detailed so as too keep all members of the team on track by giving precise details and instructions on what must be done. Also, a scope management plan is needed as there are many people involved in the project process and everyone must be working towards accomplishing the same goal. I would plan the project scope management by first figuring out what is the end goal of the project. Then listing possible things that must get done to reach that final end goal, and after that I would assign how long I think each of these processes would take so as to outline the plan and get an estimated end date. The scope is also important because it can attract certain investors by letting external sources know exactly what you are planning on pursuing and what factors will affect this plan. If you have too wide of a scope then it will take longer to complete as you are trying to accomplish too much and may waste time on irrelevant tasks. Also, since medical devices can pose serious health risk it is important to set the scope on major details and to not leave anything out.
Project scope planning is key management practice for planning and delivering projects successfully. Project scope incorporates high-level highlights or abilities that the team has focused on conveying to a client and those they have not focused on conveying. Project scope is frequently characterized by official support, directing advisory group, project support, and the project's customer with contribution from other suitable partners.
While it is a terrible practice to define something with itself Project scope management is the management of the scope of the project.
This is important at several phases within a project from its genesis all the way to its completion. Initially, it is mainly to process of filling in all the steps needed to get
to a desired outcome. For device development, that would be a device that is able to preform an envisioned task. the idea can be " doing surgery through the cardiovascular network rather than inter-thorasic incisions and
the output would catheters with surgical tools attached. To do this, the first and foremost important step is the initial research and consultation with specific individual.
Identifying who needs to be spoken to is the make or break factor. Imagine that a catheter was made without taking into consideration clotting and a few moments after it enters you have several clots forming on it surface that
fet released into the blood stream and lead to a stroke or death. If that discovery was made near the anticipated "end phase" of the project then the project will most definately go bust or it will have a major setback that the
company may not be able to afford. once the initial scope is defined, the role shifts to analyzing the results of each step of the process initial decided on and determining if there are any missed components or if there is any suspect for
a change in schedule or plan such as the introduction of a new factor such as turbulance in the blood needs to be considered when designing the controls and stiffness of the surgical tools.
The main job is to do the research and ask the right people in order to define the scope of personnel, equipment, and knowledge needed to finish the task and then ensuring that the initial defined scope
accurately defines the path/steps needed to reach the desired result.
Scope management is an important part of the company to inform the public and potential investors the projects description and heading. Its helpful for the company to have this timeline because they can use it to meet deadlines and allow others to expect a certain outcome at any given time.
I would plan the scope management to be agreed upon by all parties to allow for a most realistic timeline. I would also want the document to be accessible by anyone interested and involved personal, with updates and edits made available with every month that passes.
Project Scope management is to get the information which is required to start a project. The work that needs to be accomplished to deliver a product, service or results with the specified features and functions. In medical device company it is necessary that the production is on time and high-quality product. Creating a timeline and ensuring that the project is on time. It means setting up of the tasks, distributing resources. Staying within the budget is an important thing because it establishes a realistic budget, identifying the goals and assigning employees to work towards the goals. It is important that the employees stay focused ad don’t waste time working away from the project scope. Identifying the risks early since the quality teams need to think about the risks as it is related to the patient and the device.
Scope management is the process of defining what work is required and then making sure all of that work. scope management plan should include the detailed process of scope determination, its management, and its control. In project management, scope is the defined features and functions of a product, or the scope of work needed to finish a project. Scope involves getting information required to start a project.
Scope management is put in place so that the project doesn't ever begin to be one of those that never gets completed. When a project is first started the time spent on every necessary task is calculated and written. However, sometimes after a project development is underway, new tasks may need to be added to make up for some overseen parts of the project. Therefore it is not abnormal for new tasks to be added to a project plan. Scope management is making sure that there are no unnecessary new tasks added to the project and making sure that everyone working on the project is staying on task and completing tasks on time.
Scope management is used to ensure that a project does not just keep expanding and expanding until it becomes impossible to take to market because it is so massive. Scope management means that throughout the life of a project the scope is kept at a size where it covers what the project is trying to address and delivers what the clients want. To appropriately plan for scope management it is important to understand the final form of the deliverables at the beginning of the project and also to create plans for what to do when the scope needs to be adjusted. Increasing the specificity of this document will allow for increased usability as any person involved in the project will be able to reference it and compare the state of the project to the document to understand what to do when the scope needs adjusting. Scope changes also need to be contextualized. The question of is the change necessary needs to be asked whenever a change is going to be made. With a well crafted scope management plan, the project will be completed on time and will deliver what the client needs.
