Pros and cons related to risk management and project management

I heard that the members of project team can be included in a risk management team. What are the pros and cons of separating the risk management team from the project management team? What are the pros and cons of having the members of the project team do risk management?

The pros of separating the risk management team from the project management team is that the risk assessment can be done by a party that was not directly involved in the development of the product. This can help provide a unbiased assessment of the product's risks. The cons can be that the risk management team may not be as knowledgeable on the product as the project team, thus they would be incapable of making an accurate assessment of the product's risks. 

The pros of having the project team members do the risk management is that they would already know how the product was made and its details, so they could make accurate assessments of the risks without needing time to understand what the product is. The cons of this, however, is that since the members were involved in the development of the product, they might be biased and not include the more severe risks in order to get the product to the market quicker.

As Dr. Simon mentioned, most of the time, the risk management team is often the same people from the project management team with the project manager to lead. In my opinion, the only con to having the project management team play the role of the risk management team would be the lacking utilization of resources. If the same people are used for both teams, this may cause a decline in productivity. Members will have the responsibility of “filling both shoes” instead of having one team for risk and one for project management causing them to risk being more productive in one role over the other. However, by having the two as separate entities, it’ll cost and there’s the risk that not all pertinent information will be communicated between the teams.

In conclusion, I think that having two separate teams may be more beneficial to the organization in terms of resources. Although both have pros and cons, by keeping them as separate entities, members of each team can fulfill their roles and communicate with each other to produce quality project output.

the pro of involving everyone in the risk project management plan is that all minds incorporated are able to put in input/different perspectives of risk.

the cons of using group members is they may have a specific influence on their products overall.

 

By having a separate team, it reduces the bias and makes sure all risks according to a standard are implemented. the cons of a separate risk team is not everyone can provide an angle on the product or have well knowledge on the smaller fine details as the team would.

Well one of the biggest pros of diving the risk management and product management team, as some of our other colleagues have alluded to, is that there wouldn't be that biased from those who were involved in making the product and wanting to see their idea come to fruition. The risk management team would be able to properly appraise the product while following specific guidelines if they operate independently. However, the con with this divide is the lack of grasping the full picture as opposed to someone who started out with the product management team from the get-go. Communication would also be stronger if both teams are conjoined and worked simultaneously since both risk management and product management would be hand in hand.
