During the risk management process you are starting an analysis to categorize the risks and after you are estimating their probabilities and severities. List three(3) potential risk using a Automated external defibrillator (AED) and describe what will take place in the evaluating process. What is the probability of the specific risks and severities if they occur?

A portable electronic device that detects irregular heartbeats that may pose a life-threatening threat is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The use of this particular instrument comes with some risks. It is not recommended to use this device in a wet environment. To prevent shocks from traveling through the water and not the heart, you must dry the victim's chest before applying any electrical pads. Towels are often included in defibrillators to allow the skin to dry. Before applying electrical shocks to a victim, direct others to stand clear of the victim. It is important to avoid touching the body as it conducts electricity as well. It is also important to never use this device in a room with combustible vapors. An explosion or fire can occur if sparks are generated. To use this device properly, you should receive training. It is possible to harm someone if you do not receive training.

AEDs require regular maintenance to function properly. This means your AED supplies must be regularly checked and replaced, as well as the unit being tested. Lack of maintenance could lead to a serious malfunction, which would eliminate the usefulness of the device. Individuals can manage the AED with dedicated software and mobile apps to ensure it is in proper working order.  A typical AED can continue to work in standby and operating temperatures between 32F and 122F (0C - 50C). That said, temperatures above 110F may begin to cause issues.  The electrode pads may also lose their effectiveness by drying out in extreme conditions. These temperatures can be reached if the device is left in direct sun or a hot vehicle. Additionally, extreme cold can also cause malfunctions or reduced lifespan. It is important to not let the AED freeze. If it does freeze, it may take a couple of days to thaw and resume functioning freezing.

The probability of battery-related issues can be mitigated through regular checks and adherence to recommended replacement schedules, with severity ranging from temporary unavailability to a complete failure during a cardiac event.
