As I was pondering the question, I couldn't help but think that it honestly wouldn't matter for the average engineer. Engineers, from my understanding, generally have a project to work out and are at the mercy of decisions made by higher ups. Overall, I do not think the question on if it is better to be public or private would really have much bearing on how an engineer tackles an assignment. The difference, in my opinion, would likely be deadlines and funding. I feel like on average, public companies may have more access to funding so the engineer may not have to worry as much about costs in research and development, but deadlines are still intense in both private and public for different reasons. I've come up with this idea simply because public companies have greater access to capital. In private companies, the company may, on average, not have as many funds so to bring more $ to the company, the product should follow a strict deadline in order to profit, but for a public company, there may be more resources but engineers are at the mercy of decisions after quarterly reports. I guess to point at the original question on if engineers would be more motivated to work at a public company or a private one, I think for the average engineer, it wouldn't matter as changes at that level may be minimal at best. Even though this lecture focused on different types of companies, I believe the better question would be if engineers would be more motivated to work in a small company vs a big company as I believe that this would produce more variable results.
