I work for a medical device servicing company where I manage products from dozens of manufacturers. It did not take long for me to realize that many of these products contain similar color schemes which naturally project an impression of cleanliness and wellbeing. These colors consist of white, green, and blue. White is often associated with cleanliness, purity, and safety. Green is commonly associated with tranquility, good luck, and health. And finally, blue is typically associated with serenity, stability, and reliability. It is no surprise that these colors are commonly found on medical devices because patients rely on this technology to increase their health which ultimately increases their state of well-being. By selecting colors such as white, green, and blue, manufacturers have strategically instilled a subconscious sense of hope and well-being in their end users.

Brand coloring is one of the simplest facets of marketing. The integration of color in marketing material is often a subconscious, psychological factor that affects the viewer. The most common colors that I see are blue and white. These colors present a clear and comfortable feeling to the user. Another common one is green to project a "natural" or "environmental" sense. These colors are also the theme that this forum page uses.

Some colors that I notice a lot are blue, green, and white. I think these are great colors for companies to use. These colors all draw the eye very quickly. For example, when I think Apple, I think white. White gives me a futuristic, "new and improved" feel and the entire Apple store is white. A lot of apps use a bright green (Spotify, Starbucks, Messages/Facetime/Phone) and I think thats an easy color to spot. Blue is seen by many as a favorite color so when you see it you associate it with good things even though thats not always the case.

Brand coloring is as essential as the product that the organization is advertising. Some of the most iconic companies in the healthcare industry also utilize this technique in their branding which others can readily identify from generic products. Johnson & Johnson uses red lettering in script font which has been around for the last 130 years. Its James Wood Johnson’s signature still being portrayed to this day and is highly recognizable. Its synonymous with the red used in first aid kits and band aid branded adhesive bandages. Similarly acetaminophen brand better known as Tylenol uses a bright red color allowing the brand to be very recognizable and is a testament to the goal of the medication which is to lower fevers and to relieve pain.

Ive noticed that most technology commercials, specifically new phone commercials, usually use an all-black or all-white background to draw focus to the product. The color white in advertising reflects cleanliness or simplicity, and those white backgrounds are mostly paired with lighthearted pop music playing the background. At the same time, the product is shown at different angles. In contrast, black background for phone advertising is usually used to represent the power of the product. The black background is paired with dramatic electronic music as well. With either color choice, the focus of the commercial is directly on the product with minimal distractions to boost the appeal. These colors emphasize the "sleek" new design or the product or the powerful hardware upgrade with the new model and how simple it is to use. In a different world, or possibly in the far future, medical devices would be advertised this way to boost appeal.

The color that I notice for most companies or businesses is the color blue. In general blue has a positive impact. Examples include water, or the sky which represents calmness and tranquility. This color positively affects the mind body and spirit, and I believe that is why companies use this color.

One-color that I notice many high-end company’s uses is black. Black is a color associated with a classic appearance. When you think about it, we even wear black for job interviews, thus marketing ourselves as sophisticated. Company’s take advantage of this knowledge when marketing their products. It is a color that can be paired with almost any color and maintain its classic appearance. Like black, white is another color I notice that many company’s uses that too can be paired with different colors and maintain its prestige. Great examples of companies that use black and white advertising colors are Apple, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Nike, Adidas, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and L’Oréal.

Dr. Simon touched upon Branding when going over the Facets of Marketing. The coloring is an important component to think about when branding a product/company. What kind of coloring do you notice companies are using and why are those colors beneficial to their business?

For example, the color red invokes hungry and the color yellow promotes happiness. Restaurants tend to use these colors so that customers are hungry when either in their restaurants or looking at their logo and associate the company with happiness. One of the largest company I can think of that utilizes this is McDonald's.

This technique is referred to as color psychology or color theory and the study of how colors affect humans on a conscious and subconscious level. I found a few of the color theories and their meanings on https://www.keycolour.net/blog/color-important-brand/. It will definitely make me look at advertisements differently.

BLUE –  Blue is seen to be very positive color. It may invoke trust, security and responsibility. It is also associated with creation and serenity. Blue instills trust and security that’s why there are many institutions that count on this color.

RED – Red is a powerful color. It is also very energetic, aggressive and provocative. Red can be used to incorporate passion and energy to your product.

GREEN – This color symbolizes health and nature. It also has a calming feeling especially for lighter shades of green.

YELLOW – Yellow is the color for vibrancy and optimism. It can also be motivating and captivating that’s why some tag prices are in this color because it helps get the attention of customers.

PURPLE – This color offers sophistication, nostalgia, exclusivity and royalty making it perfect for some of those selling expensive jewelry.

PINK –  Dark shades of pink are very energetic and instills excitement while lighter shades shows a romantic feel.

ORANGE –  This color can be effective for children because of its cheerful, friendly and fun feels.

BROWN-   This shade elicits simplicity and stability. It also looks very down to earth.

Black – Black promotes a serious or classic campaign. There is also sophistication and exclusivity in this color which works well with expensive products.

White – This color looks very plain but when used, it shows purity, cleanliness and is very enticing to the human eye.

Every color has an equivalent meaning behind it and conveys a certain feeling which makes them all the more vital, that’s why it pays if business owners have a little background before choosing a color scheme.

I agree that blue is a popular color used in businesses to promote different things. Blue is a calming color that seeks to create peace. In most medical settings the color blue is used for the patients. Hospitals and medical offices are seen as places of healing. Blue can help create positivity for patients healing and going through treatments. It is best to have the most positive tone and colors to evoke positivity in everyone. Other businesses use blue to create a positive environment.

I noticed that alot of companies the color blue, why? Blue is like the calm seas, blue inspires a sense of calm and spiritual awareness along with feelings of trust. Blue is a great choice for healthcare and medical brands which are attempting to inspire a sense of calm and healing. On the other hand, deeper blues offer corporate brands a sense of confidence and professionalism.

Colors that I notice companies are using are typically red or blue. First I think companies choose these colors as abstract colors because other hues such as gray, orange, brown, do not necessarily draw in attention to products and/or services. For example, Dunkin Donuts uses the colors orange and pink to advertise their products. I believe it is because the orange and pink combination is not popular in the advertising industry so they took these colors and marketed to a way that can appeal to the consumers. Because red is such a popular color when it comes to advertising, I believe in order to draw more attention to consumers, advertisers need to develop a strong logo. Target is great example for using red colors along with a target symbol and bullseye dog as an ideal way for shoppers to stay engaged with their company. I feel that Arby's has a great branding idea with the red color and cowboy hat. In this case I feel that they are not as popular because what they serve, which is food, does not appeal to most customers.

Color plays a huge part on emotional psychology. When thinking of a brand identity, companies often look toward color palettes for inspiration. With the increase of social media. Marketing and branding a business are now becoming saturated due to the open access of information and the movement of everyone starting their own business. So how can a new company stand out in a market that is full of logos?

I see a lot of healthcare associated companies using the colors blue and purple. I think they use the color blue because that is common associate color that a person think of when they see blue. Blue is a more common color that we see in out daily like that can be associated with comfort or welcoming. While purple is more so a warm absorbing color that is also inviting.

Color branding is very important when marketing a company as it is the customers’ first impression of the company. Colors convey emotions, feelings, and experiences, so it is not just a visual aid. Most companies usually choose 3 colors in their design logo. It is known that 60% of your design should be a neutral color, 30% of the design should be your secondary brand color, and 10% of the design should be your core brand color. Every color is associated with something specific in life. For example, the most popular color of choice is blue.  Blue is associated with being trustworthy and reliable. It can also be associated with soothing and calming. Chase, one of the biggest banks on the East coast has blue in its logo because it wants its customers to trust it with their money. Moreover, VISA , American Express, and Bank of America are in the same boat. Also, the skincare brand NIVEA has a blue logo to signify its soothing and relaxing lotions and shampoo.

Most commonly now, instead of utilizing colors, people are utilizing simplicity and fonts. I have noticed a lot the cleaner more green companies, that are environmentally friendly or want to promote a sort of freshness use simple logos, with green colors. For example, Whole Foods uses green logo with the O as an apple. It is fairly simple, promotes a healthy look, and that things are fresh from this market. Nutrition apps use the same concept, of being fairly simple and utilizing the color green. Other brands which are using this tactic that are simple and eco-friendly or reuse/recycle products are THINX and YESSTRAWS. These two companies, want to minimize waste and focus on the environment. Their logos are both fairly simple with THINK being in black and white, and the STRAWS also being in black and white but the straws logo is made up of straws. Simplicity in our time is now being categorized as minimalistic concepts (for instance minimalistic waste or minimizing harm to the environment). Brands can use brown as well as it represents an earthy color, but for the most part, it has once again a minimalistic style, with earth tones such as green, brown, or simple black and white.
