What is EI? How do you know you have it? How do you get it? Do you need it? Why? Think about this concept and discuss a few things.

Firstly, how and why do you think EI affects success in selling?

Next, what impact do you think it would also have on Marketing?

What sorts of cases could you think of where EI is particularly important in medical device sales and marketing?

Here is the Kidwell paper to get you started in some research to that effect.

"EI refers to our ability to understand moods, behaviors and impulses, and control them to match a particular situation."

This concept is extremely important to understand as there are very few companies who understand the emotion of their buyer. It is a concept where a business has to understand the emotions of their customer at the right time they desire that product. Once that is identified, they can build a relationship with the customer so it helps you to target the customers in the right place, at the right time, and get to know them on a deeper level. The emotions that need to be identifies are for instance, what emotional factors influence a buyer to buy a certain product?, what triggers them to buy? how does this affect their daily life? or how much of an importance would this product carry in their lives, etc.

Targeting these kinds of emotions can help build a successful marketing strategy for a company to enable the customer to fully trust their product.

Emotional Intelligence primarily focuses on how an individual is able to identify, consider and control their internal emotions as well as identify these in others. This involves various aspects of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management that can be applicable to all aspects of everyday life.

One way to know that you have EI is to take a test that measures your EI or EQ (IQ) in a sense. From there, you will be able to find how much EI/EQ you have and perhaps devise a plan to continually increase your EI. I believe this is essential to everyday life because it allows human beings to solidify and nourish their relationships with others. From a business standpoint, it is a beautiful thing to have collaborators work together to combine their knowledge and insight towards a problem. With EQ, 1+1 does equal 3. By that I mean that when two people are in sync with EQ they can allocate and express each other's ideas plus the combination of ideas that they both brainstorm. Essentially, EQ allows for a win/win situation almost everytime. EQ allows the sales reps to identify the customer's needs and standpoints, address those standpoints while at the same time honing in on the company's product to devise a specific solution to satisfy the customer. EQ would without a doubt increase sales in Marketing but also if expanded to other parts of the company, it would stimulate a win/win environment within the company. So, you would see an increased passion for collaboration and success in every department.

Emotional intelligence is very important for companies to understand because it focuses on the customer's emotions whether they are desiring to buy a product and what their current needs are. As discussed in the lecture, it was mentioned that the company should create products for current needs of the customer and it's their job to convince the buyer that they need the product before they know it themselves. In addition, emotional intelligence helps in connecting with the customer, this helps the company establish a good sense of communication and receive feedback from their customers using the product to further satisfy the general masses; all customers like companies that hear their suggestions in the new iteration of the product.

I agree with the above posts regarding the definition of EI. EI is very important for selling. As mentioned in the lecture, building relationships with the customer is extremely important, and in order to build a good relationship it will require a certain level of EI. In my company some of the sales reps who sell the most product only sell to 2 or 3 different surgeons, highlighting just how important relationship building is. In my company EI is important for both marketing and the sales force as they are both directly involved in surgeon interactions.

Having EI will help a sales rep know when to introduce a new product to a surgeon. For example, if a surgeon is really frustrated with a competitor's product that he has been using for a long time, it may present a perfect opportunity for the sales rep to introduce the surgeon to their company's product that they believe is better. However, the timing and approach may make or break the sale. The sales rep needs to be able to recognize these opportunities and must be able to detect by the surgeons emotions when is the best time to make his sales pitch.

EI affects sales because people want to do business with people they like and trust. People don't want to do business with someone who they don't like because you don't even want to talk to that person again. Also, I believe that people want to give money to and support people who they believe are "good" people. If someone fits your idea of a "good" person you are more likely to want to work with this person and give money toward their cause. This effects marketing because you want to show that you are a "good" person to increase sales. For medical devices sales, the top medical device company is Johnson and Johnson ( https://www.mpo-mag.com/issues/2015-07-01/view_features/top-30-global-medical-device-companies). When you think of Johnson and Johnson due to their marketing you think of someone you can trust. Someone who takes care of babies. Yes, they have hit a few rough patches but the first thing you see on their "about" page is "Caring for the world, one person at a time, inspires and unites the people of Johnson & Johnson." ( https://www.jnj.com/about-jnj).

What is EI?
EI is defined as being able to understand moods, behavior and impulses and control them to match a certain situation. One should possess the capability to exhibit mature emotions to better understand, negotiate, and sympathize with others. This is especially important with the economy going global, since people interact with different cultures on a daily basis.
How do you know you have it?
There are five key categories of EI: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and people skills. Self- awareness is the capability to acknowledge an emotion as it happens. Self-regulation is the ability to control ones emotions. Motivation can be utilized to encourage oneself along with others. Empathy is an important trait since it assists in helping people to discern others feelings and reasoning behind certain actions. People skills are paramount to success in any industry. Those who have EI tend to think of others, think before they react, modify emotions, are able to understand how others are feeling which helps them connect and build better relationships with others.
How do you get it?
EI can be obtained by collecting information from others. This can be done by asking others for their opinion, observation of others, reflecting upon emotions, learning from criticism, taking time to think before acting, and understanding why others respond or act in a certain manner.
Do you need it?
Emotional Intelligence is important since the qualities that stem from it include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and people skills. Through these skills, workers will understand their own strengths and weaknesses along with those of others. This will allow them to motivate others through empathy, which exhibits people skills.
How/why do you think EI affects success of selling? What impact do you think it has on marketing?
Those who enjoy a strong emotional intelligence can better understand the customer along with their needs and wants. Once a person can discern the wants and needs of the customer, they can better market the product.
Influential marketing leads to an increase in sales or interest in the product.
By targeting the five key strategies companies can produce a device that is better suited for the end user and also create a sense of trust. This trust will lead to surgeons using more of the trusted devices. The surgeons can then put patients mind at ease by passing on the trust they have in these devices/company.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as the ability to understand our emotions and manage them effectively as well as to understand and effectively manage the emotions of other employees.
Strong EI in sales person means the ability to understand the client’s needs, to manage various kinds of selling problems and to deal with possible emotional troubles.
Having EI is necessary for sales jobs.As a seller with high EI should be better able to finalize sales and to create a positive emotional experience with regards to customer care and satisfaction, so EI is associated with customer relations.
According to Kindwell paper, High-EI sales professionals understand subtle facial expressions of confused customers, which prompt them to repeat or clarify messages or find better ways to explain product or solution details. So, with low EI Kindwell expect a weak relationship between cognitive ability and sales performance.
Several studies have reported that EI might be a good predictor of job performance, so for medical device company if the management could screen sales representatives and predict sales performance
success by emotional intelligence scores, the medical sales organizations could be more
successful.

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

We all have different personalities, different wants and needs, and different ways of showing our emotions. Navigating through this all takes tact and cleverness – especially if we hope to succeed in life. This is where emotional intelligence becomes important.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they're telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. It also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively.

People with high emotional intelligence are usually successful in most things they do. Why? Because they're the ones that others want on their team. When people with high emotional intelligence send an email, it gets answered. When they need help, they get it. Because they make others feel good, they go through life much more easily than people who are easily angered or upset.

Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence

In his book titled "Emotional Intelligence - Why It Can Matter More Than IQ" 1995, Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence:

Self-Awareness – People with high emotional intelligence are usually very self-aware . They understand their emotions, and because of this, they don't let their feelings rule them. They're confident – because they trust their intuition and don't let their emotions get out of control.

They're also willing to take an honest look at themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they work on these areas so they can perform better. Many people believe that this self-awareness is the most important part of emotional intelligence.

Self-Regulation – This is the ability to control emotions and impulses. People who self-regulate typically don't allow themselves to become too angry or jealous, and they don't make impulsive, careless decisions. They think before they act. Characteristics of self-regulation are thoughtfulness, comfort with change, integrity , and the ability to say no.
Motivation – People with a high degree of emotional intelligence are usually motivated . They're willing to defer immediate results for long-term success. They're highly productive, love a challenge, and are very effective in whatever they do.
Empathy – This is perhaps the second-most important element of emotional intelligence. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand the wants, needs, and viewpoints of those around you. People with empathy are good at recognizing the feelings of others, even when those feelings may not be obvious. As a result, empathetic people are usually excellent at managing relationships , listening , and relating to others. They avoid stereotyping and judging too quickly, and they live their lives in a very open, honest way.
Social Skills – It's usually easy to talk to and like people with good social skills, another sign of high emotional intelligence. Those with strong social skills are typically team players. Rather than focus on their own success first, they help others develop and shine. They can manage disputes, are excellent communicators, and are masters at building and maintaining relationships.
As you've probably determined, emotional intelligence can be a key to success in your life – especially in your career. The ability to manage people and relationships is very important in all leaders, so developing and using your emotional intelligence can be a good way to show others the leader inside of you.

How to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence

The good news is that emotional intelligence can be learned and developed. As well as working on your skills in the five areas above, use these strategies:

Observe how you react to people. Do you rush to judgment before you know all of the facts? Do you stereotype? Look honestly at how you think and interact with other people. Try to put yourself in their place , and be more open and accepting of their perspectives and needs.
Look at your work environment. Do you seek attention for your accomplishments? Humility can be a wonderful quality, and it doesn't mean that you're shy or lack self-confidence. When you practice humility, you say that you know what you did, and you can be quietly confident about it. Give others a chance to shine – put the focus on them, and don't worry too much about getting praise for yourself.
Do a self-evaluation. Try out our emotional intelligence quiz . What are your weaknesses? Are you willing to accept that you're not perfect and that you could work on some areas to make yourself a better person? Have the courage to look at yourself honestly – it can change your life.
Examine how you react to stressful situations. Do you become upset every time there's a delay or something doesn't happen the way you want? Do you blame others or become angry at them, even when it's not their fault? The ability to stay calm and in control in difficult situations is highly valued – in the business world and outside it. Keep your emotions under control when things go wrong.
Take responsibility for your actions. If you hurt someone's feelings, apologize directly – don't ignore what you did or avoid the person. People are usually more willing to forgive and forget if you make an honest attempt to make things right.
Examine how your actions will affect others – before you take those actions. If your decision will impact others, put yourself in their place. How will they feel if you do this? Would you want that experience? If you must take the action, how can you help others deal with the effects?

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability for an individual to identify and utilize emotional factors when it comes to either themselves or other people. Essentially, an emotional intelligent person will be able to tell how another person is feeling simply by looking at a few factors such as body language, speech, etc. EI could be utilized in sales by trying to get the buyer emotionally invested in the product. For example, if a company wanted attract long-time consumers without alienating potential new customers, they can run advertisements and such that cater to the factors that drew in the initial long-time consumers while showing off new things so it can also draw in new customers. This could backfire however, since catering to the emotions of one specific group can hurt the adoption of potential new customers. It is important for a marketing team to consider how potential customers will view the product at the emotional level and if they can get as many people in the target demographic as possible to get emotionally invested in the product. EI has its role in medical device marketing. These instruments and other devices are often marketed at researchers and clinicians. The role that EI would have in this situation is to find out what makes these individuals tick and latch onto whatever they seem the most invested in. For example, a researcher may find themselves more emotional invested in an instrument that can specially help with a big portion of their research. In addition, it can also help that the sales person knows their customer (via publications and such) and mention their research in sales pitch in order to better invest the customer into considering the product.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. I think highly of EI. People's emotions plays a important role on the efficiency of work. For example, If you have bad mood, you might have less passion for you work. Moreover, you have Great EI also means you have the capability to identify the emotions of others, it is a huge advantages for sale. Since when you design a product, you can identify the buyer's emotional request for the product. For instance, when you buy a cup, you might not buy the cup just because it is a tool for drinking water, you buy it because you like Elsa (one of the character from Disney animation) and their is the image of the Elsa on the cup. Or you buy it because one of famous actor are using it.

Emotional Intelligence is something which is within us that helps us to sense how we feel and enables us to truly connect with others and form a bond. It gives us the ability to be present and listen to someone when they most need it. And emotional intelligence is that sense of internal balance within us that enables us to keep our composure, make good decisions, communicate successfully, and maintain effective leadership even when under stress. The main important thing is ti make that trusting relationships with people, because Relationships are so important to our success in business—and not just our relationships with clients. Our internal relationships, the ones we have with our colleagues and team members, are equally important. They can make or break us! And the quality of our internal relationships determines the effectiveness of our organizational cultures.
Marketing people face many challenges every day tough prospects and customers, stress, putting out fires, busy calendars, etc. Those things may never change. But obviously I will say your reaction to them can be recognized, controlled and improved by increasing your self-awareness.And also I will say you can’t change how you think and feel about something so you have learn how to control your emotion and react to it. Medical devices industry is one of the industry where you have to deal with EI on daily basis specially if you are a marketing person, because we are making devices to help people so they can have more mobility, they can live a better life so the important thing is to convince them that yes this thing can make your life style way better and you don't have to suffer. In other words I will say it is all about wining the trust of a person and being a marketing guy in medical device industry you have to deal with people emotions and sometime their feelings and you have to learn that how you can make a business out of it than get flooded with their feelings.

Emotional Intelligence helps companies to understand the customers emotions, mood, behaviour and to control them. It helps companies connect with the customers, have good communication to know the current needs of the customers and also to get feedback. EI is obtained by asking customers itself about their current needs, feedback, ther opinions etc. This is important because, a companys product can stand good in product only when they design a product according to current customers needs and demands. By having good sense of EI, this can be achieved which in turn helps companies to have good sale. Dealing with peoples emotions in the market is very important for the companys success.
