I found the idea that biocompatibility depends on the tissue especially interesting. A material may be considered biocompatible for one application but not necessarily for another because different tissues can respond differently to the same material. The slides also showed that the interaction between a biomaterial and the body can involve protein adsorption, cell adhesion, cell proliferation, inflammation, and eventually tissue integration or chronic inflammation. This makes me think that choosing a material involves much more than simply determining whether the material is “safe.” What factors do you think should be considered most important when choosing a biomaterial for a specific medical device?
