Should project managers be involved in every aspect of a project or only in the major decision-making processes?

Managers should be on top of what is going on with the project, so he/she can make decisions based on that. How could a manager make a decision without knowing what is going on with the project itself? A manager should be aware of any success, or failure of the project so they can make the appropriate corrections. The project manager handles the project scope as well as the resources assigned to the project.

The project manager is the one who initiates, implements, and accomplishes the project across the organization using their project management skills. In general, it is vital for the project manager to supervise the project from beginning to end. They should oversee each activity, interact with both stakeholders as well as team members, and make sure that each phase of the project is accomplished on time. The project manager necessarily needs to forecast the possible potential obstacles or risks and discover proper solutions to reduce or eliminate them so that they do not block the project’s success. The project manager must interact with team members on a regular basis and needs to make progress in the project so that he can manage all required resources for the project execution. Monitoring each activity of the project can help the manager in knowing the possible hurdles which can be solved or eliminated in future projects.

Project managers should be involved in every aspect of the project to ensure the team is completing tasks in a timely manner. With that being said there also needs to be balance. Although the PM should be aware of everything going on it is important to allow team members to work on their own and bring decisions to the table as well. If a single individual could complete tasks by themselves there wouldn't be any purpose of creating a team.

I agree with @jj52 that project managers should be involved in every aspect of the project, not just in major decision making processes. It is their responsibility to oversee and coordinate the project, from planning to execution to monitoring and control. All tasks should be completed on time and within allocated budget. By being involved in every aspect, project managers can identify potential issues and address them before they become major problems and ensure that all team members are working effectively and efficiently towards project goals, However, the depth at which project managers can assist depends on the type of project. For instance, if the project manager does not have a technical background, the project manager may focus more on the high-level decision-making processes, such as project scope, budget, timelines, and risk management. The project manager should still maintain regular communication with the development team to ensure that the project is progressing as planned and to address any issues that may arise.

I agree with how @sb2538 emphasized the role of the project manager and how they are responsible with initiating the project and seeing it through. That being said it is important for the project manager to have a strong grasp with all the departments they are overseeing in regards to what they are working on, their deadlines, what they have accomplished, any setbacks the team may have etc. This shows that there's a wide array of responsibilities that the PM oversees and has many different factors to consider. I also agree with how @wk46 mentioned that the project manager should be involved with the teams and help when necessary but also have the personal control to step back when they may not know as much about the topic that is being worked on. While it is important for the PM to have their hand in all the teams, it is also important that the project manager does not overstep and potentially make a wrong decision due to their lack of knowledge regarding the subject.

Project managers should have a say in a lot of the decision-making, but should also avoid micromanagement. Therefore, they should be involved in the major decision-making process but should also have an idea of other decisions that are being made in the project. The project manager should be able to delegate smaller decisions to the other managers under them. Those managers should also have the technical skills to be able to understand the work and make the right decisions. For example, in a medical device company, the project managers should have managers in different departments such as quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and research and development. Those managers should be able to lead their respective teams and make decisions in regard to that department. The managers should then report to the project manager and bring major decisions to them. Although it is important for the project manager to understand what is happening in the project, it is also beneficial to show trust in the team through delegating and allowing for smaller issues to be resolved without the project manager intervening. This will, in turn, help maximize productivity throughout the team and produce the best product.

The project manager should be involved in each aspect of the project so that they are able to make the major decisions. This doesn’t mean that the project manager should be on completing tasks in each aspect of the project but rather that they should be up to date on what is happening. Ensuring that they know how each member is doing and how the tasks progress is going can ensure that they can make a more knowledgeable decision when needed.

Project management should definitely be more involved in every step. Since they are the one initiating the project, they need to understand every step that is occurring and observe certain steps to understand what is happening in the process. I think project management definitely needs to be more involved with the process and testing and should be given progress updates. This is to ensure that any problems that arise can be dealt with promptly and the schedule can be adjusted if necessary.

I think that in a way, project managers should be involved in almost every aspect of the project as well as obviously the major decision-making processes. Good PMs should create their teams knowing the expertise of each team member. If a team member needs to make a decision that may or may not impact the project, for example like being unsure of choosing between two vendors with pros and cons, the PM should be ok answering that question. The PM should make themselves available to answer the question. The PM should also know of everything that is happening, at least a high level overview. That way, when it comes time to make large decision, they will be well informed rather than having to consult their team members last minute, risking miscommunication.

In my opinion, a project manager should be well versed enough to move in and out of conversations between all project members. That way, they can provide advice and direction without taking away time from project members in order to explain concepts. Thus, the PM should be able to be both; someone who can lay back as well as be meticulous. By being involved in every aspect of the project, PMs can identify problems early on and take steps to address them before they become issues.
