Should companies hire project managers with experience managing similar projects, or is it more important for them to be able to adapt to new project types?

Ideally a company should hire a project manager that has experience managing a specific type of project as well as being able to adapt to different project types. It would be beneficial for the company to have a manager that is skilled in one scope while being able to handle differences in project type as well, however, it should mainly depend on the type of project the manager is being hired for. If the project has clear cut requirements that need to be met with no deviations, then it would be best to hire a project manager who is familiar with that field. They would have a strong understanding of the industry, understand the needs and requirements for the project, and challenges that the team may face during development. Alternatively, the project may be a new endeavor which may not have much precedence prior to it therefore there could be a large scope for creativity and change. A manager with varied experiences and the ability to adapt to different project types would be better suited for this kind of role. This kind of manager would be able to provide a fresh perspective to the development of the project and have a stronger ability to handle problems when they arise.

@ag2265 I completely agree.

Having relevant experience can help a project manager understand the unique challenges and risks associated with a particular type of project, in addition to bringing best practices and techniques for successful project management. However, it's also important to have adaptable project managers. Today's environment is rapidly changing. Project managers need to be flexible, to be able to respond to shifting priorities, changing requirements, and unexpected challenges. That means project managers in general need to have a strong foundation of management principles and practices that can be applied across different project types. Companies should seek out those who not only have relevant experience but those who can have these skills as well.

I think in today's rapidly moving and ever-changing society, adaptability is more favorable. In my experience, there are many instances where upper management views an issue and all resources need to be diverted onto that issue in order to get it resolved for the company's benefit. This requires project managers to have a very adaptable experience as pivoting into a new direction is key. Often when receiving new information from another department can deter your initial project and force the team to move in a different direction and work towards a different outcome. In these instances, it is extremely beneficial to have a manager who can adapt and pave the way in "uncharted" waters. Therefore, I think although a good foundation is essential, but to succeed and navigate in the fast-pace work life, I think a more adaptable style is beneficial.

A project manager should be someone who has a broad variety of experience to bring to the table. The job of the PM is to interface with all the aspects of the project; having the background knowledge to speak to all team members on a technical level is extremely important. Without this, time & ideas are lost in translation. It saves the project time & money to have a qualified manager that has the technical & general knowledge to speak to all the members of the project at a high level. Without this, a project loses time in the process of bringing the PM themselves up to speed at every juncture.

BME projects often involve interdisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, medical professionals, and other stakeholders, which can make coordination and communication more difficult. Additionally, BME projects often involve regulatory compliance, ethical considerations, and patient safety concerns, which can add an extra layer of complexity to project management.
