I think one of the most effective strategies is creating a culture of knowledge sharing where team members regularly teach each other their specialized skills. This could be through brief "lunch and learn" sessions, pairing junior and senior staff on tasks, or having people rotate through different aspects of the project. This approach accomplishes two things at once: individuals develop new competencies while the team builds collective knowledge that makes everyone less dependent on any single person. In medical device development specifically, having multiple people understand regulatory requirements or critical technical processes means you're not stuck if your regulatory expert goes on leave or gets pulled into another priority.

@bryan-xavier I one hundred percent agree that peer mentorship and knowledge sharing is beneficial to fostering a successful project. Apart from our advisor on our capstone project, we also collectively shared a peer mentor who guided us through certain aspects of the project. The result of this mentorship definitely shaped the outcomes of the project for the better and lead to a more complete and polished product. Coming from my experience working in a team environment, I am a firm believer that team development is highly dependent on having safe constructive settings where team members are open to communication and feel comfortable within their teams to receive and deliver feedback. I think this aspect may be a bit more important during the beginning stages of project development rather than the executing phase, but if it was weak in the beginning than it will also be weak in the end which will lead to worse results and project productivity in the long run. As others have suggested, cross training is a good way to build up a teams resilience and help foster an individual team members growth. By learning others roles, that team member gains that knowledge and experience allowing them to develop themselves professionally while also providing a backup for the team should that team member need to support another aspect of the project. Something else that may help when the team faces challenges is to use the experiences as learning opportunities that can allow for future adjustments to the teams workflow to improve the overall execution of the project.

Strong leadership by the project manager can help the team develop throughout the entire life cycle of the project. Leadership guides the team to the correct decisions regarding the direction of the project and provides a clear vision of what the project should be accomplishing. A second approach to help the team develop is through team collaboration and team development activities. Team development involves building the relationships between team members so they work together effectively. Building these relationships will help the team communicate better, build trust among each other and resolve conflicts efficiently.

Both approaches need to be implemented as part of an effective team development program. Project managers are expected to lead and manage the team, but the team is also expected to have a sense of ownership of the project. If there is no sense of ownership and accountability, the team may not take responsibility for the development of the project. Team collaboration and team development can enhance a team's ability to collaborate and increase team efficiency. A collaborative team environment promotes open communication which is essential for achieving project objectives. Strong collaboration builds the team's social capital by fostering positive working relationships and encourages teamwork.

When the project has concluded and team members depart the organization, the collaborative relationship built while working on the project remains with them. The social capital developed within the team creates a long-term benefit for the team members and can foster future collaboration in other projects.

Establishing team development and creating a regular back and forth between teammates are what I believe to be essential in project execution. It may not come natural to some, but I feel as though attempting to establish a bond between members which could later grow into a regular dynamic is what can lead a project to become more overarching and developed than others. The beginning stages of establishing team connection can lead to a lot of trial and error, though I believe that it should always start with establishing equal footing. Projects go awry when people can not properly communicate with each other, this can stem from people feeling as though they are not able to freely voice their opinions. It would also help that everyone in the team tries to make the effort of understanding everyone's specific skill sets. Just because a member of the team specializes in one aspect of the project doesn't mean they can't make the effort of learning about another aspect to establish some commonality. Great teammates should be able to effectively explain aspects of the project to each other with everyone being able to offer different plans. I always believed that conversation is at the heart of every successful project, and I think that holds even truer with team development.
