As many of the students stated, design inputs so usually come from research and other investigational ideas. I would like to add that some also come from doctors and other medical companies. Hospitals and companies contract other companies to provide certain parts and products. In these cases, they provide the design inputs to the contracted companies. Failure and limitations in existing products also give rise to new needs. Now a days, most products are reinvented to be more effective and efficient, these are also design inputs.

The design input essentially details what is expected of your finished product. Sources of design input can be taken from market research to see what consumers want and how to make improvements on your product that they were initially not expecting but they might need later on. Another design input would be the regulations that the product must abide by as the product cannot be brought to market unless it conforms to the established standards. Another possible design input would be the required materials for actually making the product or rather the cost to making the tangible product and also the employer's expectations of the product itself. Also, another design input could be a potential improvement that could be made later on after the product is finished, such as software updates or physical attachments. These things could be new ideas not previously thought of before or improvements that can be made based on what other competitive products lack.

Design inputs are the foundation of a medical device. Solid Design inputs makes the rest of medical device product development easier too. Design input should not just be the responsibility of one person. it is a team effort. when a team is involved, you get the benefit of everyone opinions and experience. we can see the sources of Design input as Industry standards, Regulations, Previous products, Competitor products, End-uses, and Prototypes.

Design inputs can greatly affect the functionality of a device. Therefore, one of the greatest factors in design inputs are the device's functions. The design inputs have to comply with the requirements of the device. For example, a computer mouse at the least has to have at least 2 inputs: right and left click. A second factor would be competition, so the developer of the computer mouse knows after some research that the mouse should have a scroll wheel. The developer implements that, but also asks potential customers what they are looking for. They say that they like the mouse they have because it can perform functionally, but it hurt their hand after a while. Because of this, the developer designs the mouse to be ergonomic. Lastly, evaluations after the product hit the market affect design inputs, so finally the mouse goes to market and the developer finds that users want some more buttons on the mouse, so he implements that.

The Design Input Document is the foundation of any product development project. It contains the basic functionality requirements and details of the product. Because of the amount of information that needs to be in the Design Input Document, there are multiple means of input. For example, the initial input likely comes from market research, comparing similar products and companies to determine what is essential in the product. Additionally, input comes from customers, any information gotten about customer desires is incredibly valuable for the DID. And finally, all departments of product development are required to comply to the DID, so they are generally also given input to what should be included.

Design inputs are starting point for product design. The requirement which form the design input establish a basis for performing subsequent design tasks and validating the design. The development of a solid foundation of requirements is the single most important design control activity. The goal of the design inputs should be clear, objective; building upon the user needs and intended use; capturing the performance, functional, safety requirements.

Design inputs are basically determined by the management, market research, users, Sales representative, and the research Scientist if he can make the product. The Design inputs are not specific as the DSD is responsible for the exact specifications for the design.
The inputs for the DID are usually from the team mentioned above regardless if the product is a makeover of the older variant or is a new device.

I guess the sources of design input will depend on a number factors such as the customer requirements who can be doctors or patients, safety, similar designs from previously manufactured devices and their designs, market research and so on. After determining the customer needs from the market research and inputs from sales representative the customer needs are understood as to what outputs are needed and design the inputs accordingly by performing tests by the research and engineering team to get to the desired input which will be the case in the case of a new product or study the inputs for a similar device that has been manufactured previously.

The sources that help determine design inputs can come from a variety of different areas such as customer feedback or intended purpose of product. For example, if feedback gathered from target consumers show the need for a compact product, the design specifications will be focused on using parts with lower dimensions. On the contrary, if the product is being created on the request of another company or customer, the major factors related to design inputs may come directly for them. For example, in the Capstone class at NJIT, the sources affecting the design inputs come directly from the needs outlined by the adviser of your project. Some other examples of design inputs may include affordability, desirable sampling rates, portable form factor, etc. Overall it is the job of the project team to develop a design that can most effectively satisfy the design inputs provided by the various sources mentioned. Since, it may be challenging to fully satisfy the needs defined by each design input, it is often common to rate the examples of design inputs with levels of importance. For instance, if a fast speed of a product is more important than a small form factor, the design of the project may favor larger components that provide significantly greater speeds. Overall, the design inputs received from sources such as customer feedback or market needs act as guidelines for how the product should be designed and developed by the project team.

Design inputs require you to have knowledge of how the device will function. This depends on the design, shape, and what the device is made to do. Design inputs are base for the device you want to create as you will need the requirements set in design input  to start designing your device because this is one of the main part of the design control.

I believe that the design inputs can be  obtained from marketing team on what type of product is required in the market in collaboration with the suggestions added by scientific experts as the product is designed for customer it must fulfill their criteria and the design must be based placing that in mind. Other requirements that are vital are performance, safety, regulatory and functionality

With a significant emphasis on the needs of the end user, design inputs make sure that your design requirements match up with the planned use of the product. Following some research on design inputs, I discovered that while they are based on end users' demands, they go beyond a simple enumeration of those needs. For instance, the end user/patient may want the gadget to be simple to use and secure for home usage if you are creating a new syringe for home injection. However, your design suggestions won't be "safe for home use" or "simple to use". The engineers will transform your design inputs into precise, quantifiable design specifications.

The main source for the design input comes from marketing. During product development, design controls are compiled based on market need for the product, ideas that fit the need, and ensuring the product is usable and sellable. Another important source for the design inputs that is also considered in marketing is customer feedback. As a research scientist for a major hospital, I've had the opportunity to work with many field applications engineers and scientist for medical device companies where user feedback was very important for the development of new instruments and system updates. Marketing and client feedback both play major roles in design input.

The sources of design input will greatly vary depending on what the project being addressed is. Certain inputs can depend on current marketing trends, other similar products in the market, the desired functions of the project itself, or any other factors that will influence what the design will look like. The main idea to follow is that the end user should be the top priority and the product should be designed around them and what they are looking for. In addition to this, customer feedback and validation testing can end up altering the design inputs and is all part of the design process.

Design input includes design plan documents such as functional requirements (what the device does), performance requirements ( how well the device should perform), and interface requirements (characteristics critical to compatibility with external system). It means the physical and performance requirements of a device used as basis for device design.
